Just outside the Top 10: Made In USA, Breathless, Hail Mary.
I can’t pick just one with Godard. It’s usually the one I’ve just watched most recently.
Vivre sa vie, I guess, if I had to pick one…
Week End— currently.
Let’s face it, Godard is a perpetual frustration….I saw in this order:
Weekend (brilliant)
Contempt (even more brilliant)
Breathless (even brillianter)
Hail Mary (eeghad!)
Sympathy for the Devil (huh?)
Tout Va Bien (double huh?)
A Band Apart (excellent)
Pierrot le fou (ASTOUNDING)
i’ve only seen about five of his films, and so far Breathless is still the most fun to watch. Band of Outsiders is probably the easiest to digest, and is still playful enough to get into anytime. My Life to Live was very good, but i only saw it once so its hard to say where it ranks… I really didn’t enjoy Masculin/Femenin all that much, but its easy to say that some films need to be re-watched (the first time i saw Breathless i didn’t think it was that great—now i can’t get it out of my head!) and i just watched Pierrot le fou, which was excellent.
In no particular order:
Pierrot le Fou – Funny, moving, beautiful
Alphaville – Dark, funny, satirical
Contempt – Bardot, Jack Palance, the photography
Yeah, I really think Pierrot le fou is one of the greatest films ever made by any director. Very few films have such an emotional impact on me. It’s funny, tragic, and utterly unclassifiable. Genius.

Thanks for your input, Bobby and Noel. I just watched Breathless and noted down the American influences (Herald, Ford) in it. I had my critique in class yesterday, my instructor thought “a girl and a gun” could be a good title since its from a famous JLG quote (although not evident in ALL his new wave films..i think M/F and Woman is a Woman are exceptions). My class also thought that the American pop culture influence could work. I’m going to watch Contempt now and try to find more threads :)
