My favorite is still “2 ou 3 choses que je sais d’elle.” Something about Marina Vlady in that blue shirt, especially when she’s thinking about “The Wild Palms [If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem],” basically in pursuit of the answer to Faulkner’s great question—what will it be, grief or nothing?—while keeping alive the grand tradition of Jean Seberg’s sweetly despondent yearning in “A bout de souffle.” Plus, it’s a rare film that features coffee, cigarettes, books (piles upon piles), and beautiful French men and women—in a nutshell, the bulk of my interests—in one spot.

I also like “Made in USA,” “Weekend,” and “Nouvelle Vague” a great deal. “La Mepris” is also quite ravishing for the sounds of Delerue and the sight of Bridgette Bardot’s ass.
