Your favorite Woody Allen's film?

Rica

Do you guys watch Woody Allen’s films?
Or is he becoming out of date and forgotten these days?
I still go to watch his films actually and enjoyed his recent film Match Point
though some people say it is so cliche about British society.

Can I hear your favorite Woody Allen film if you have one?
My best three are Annie Hall, Purple Rose of Cairo, and Sweet and Lowdown.

-Deconstructing Harry
-Purple rose

Where the hell is Bananas? That’s one of the funniest most absurd films of the 70s!

“You ever been to Denmark?”
“I’ve been to the Vatican.”
“That’s in Rome.”
“Yeah, well they were doin’ so well in Rome they decided to open one up in Denmark.”

My top 3 is pretty standard (Crimes and Misdemeanors, Manhattan, Annie Hall) but these are close behind and definetly underrated:

The Purple Rose of Cairo
Another Woman
Deconstructing Harry

And i also love Everyone Says I Love You.

To me Woody is still and will always be one of my fav directors. My three are

- Crimes and Misdemeanors
- Hannah and Her Sisters
- Manhattan

As well as Love and Death just behind them. Match Point is close too.

hahaha.
isn’t it funny how difficult it is to just pick one?
… or even limit yourself to three.

My favorite two has to be: Annie Hall, because I loved the witty script and his take on love. And secondly, Cassandra’s Dream, because I thought it was the darkest of his films, and I loved the Phillip Glass score…

Has anybody seen Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask?
That was hilarious.

I saw Woody and his Korean wife walking in Hyde Park in summer a few years ago
when he was filming Match Point. I could recognise him immediately!

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask is my least favorite of his, it simply isn’t very funny nor clever.

Oh, you don’t like it?

I thought the last episode was quite funny
which, I think, was a parody of Fantastic Voyage (1966).

Did anyone like Bananas? I’m going to watch it over the weekend. To be honest, I’m no Woody Allen fan. The effect of his work on me is like Garcia Marquez’s (but for Hundred Years of Solitude which is hands down one of the best novels of all time)… When asked if I like their work, I always say “it’s ok” or “sometimes” and I end up buying another book or watching another film because I just know that there’s something there and I don’t want to miss out on the lifechanging image or phrase. Anyway, did anyone like Bananas?

I’m not a huge wood y allen fan but I have to admit that MatchPoint was a great hitchcock-esque film

I have to say that I recognize MATCH POINT as his masterpiece, all the elements are orquestrated in such a masterful way; his most recent film Cassandra’s Dream is a terrible failure. My favourite Allen’s are the serious ones, yes the ones that he takes Bergman as a model:
Husbands and Wifes, Hannah and her Sisters, Another woman, Interiors.
Alice is very interesting.

It is interesting to see some of you liked Match Point
as British media didn’t praise this film.
They said it was a cliche about British society
but that is why I enjoyed it!

Just saw “Stardust Memories”, an absolute treat with mamazing dialog and absurdist Fellinian imagery.
Still, I also love “Bullets over Broadway”, “Sweet and Lowdown” and “Deconstructing Harry”.

MANHATTAN. his most realized work yet.

I watched Celebrity earlier. Knowledgeable take on La Dolce Vita. Woody’s movies are never a waste of time to me, although he could perhaps have a more significant filmography if he took his time a bit more. My favorite is the obvious Annie Hall, although Manhattan is close. I found Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex hilarious, and the best of his early comedies. My favorite era is ’77 – ’80 anyway. The 4 films from that period, man… could be my top 4.

I absolutely love “Stardust Memories” !! Crimes and misdemeanors is close behind.

Annie Hall
Stardust Memories
Love & Death

But also: Hannah & Her Sisters (somehow the music he uses for Michael Caine’s character in that just is Michael Caine), Manhattan, Husbands & Wives, Deconstructing Harry

Worst film: Match Point. I’ve seen almost nothing else he’s done this decade, but probably should check out Melinda & Melinda.

Excellent post, been waiting for a Woody Allen thread to pop up…..he’s my all time number one favorite moviemaker of all time, and to just pick 1 or 2 of his films is impossible. So here’s my favorites. in order:

1) Manhattan
2) Love and Death
3) Annie Hall
4) Match Point
5) Take the Money and Run
6) Bananas
7) Hannah and Her Sisters
8) Sleeper
9) Scoop
10) Melinda + Melinda

Manhattan. For Gordon Willis and that beautiful opening. For Mariel, Gershwin and the Wally Shawn cameo.

His best movie? Man, it’s hard to choose the best one since the guy is like a complete auteur. In honesty, I’ll say his entire film canon is his best movie (it’s one big film).

The ones I like the most I guess, cuz they’re the ones I own, are probably:

Manhattan, Annie Hall and Love and Death.
