Match Point, Annie Hall, Deconstructing Harry.
Anyone seen his new one? It got some very solid buzz at Cannes this year…
Out of all Woody Allen’s brilliant movies, Zelig is my all-time favourite. It’s a classic, and screamingly funny… The guy is pure genius.
I adore him, just think maybe he’s lost a tiny bit of his magic but he’s still important and relevant nonetheless. I’m looking forward to seeing Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
My favourite is Manhattan – love Woody in black and white!
Other two favourites are Annie Hall and Play It Again, Sam.
Every single film he made during the ’80’s are all masterpieces! My top 3 would be: HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, and PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
Stardust Memories
Husbands & Wives
(tie) Manhattan | September | Hannah
Match Point
Manhattan
Vicky Christina Barcelona
Annie Hall
SHADOWS AND FOG, INTERIORS, ALICE, and RADIO DAYS stand out as the characters were so strong. Let us not forget the great BROADWAY DANNY ROSE! Most of these films have characters that remind me of the New Yorkers I grew up with and observed while growing up.

Watching sweet and lowdown recently i have noticed that it is rarely mentioned. Though it shows allens comedic talents are still in there somewhere. Penn’s performnace is radiant and samantha morton gives a very subtle performance as Penn’s love interest(both were nominated for oscars for there performance). Penn channels allen wonderfully and the script is very sweet and lowdown like the title states. I think outside of matchpoint this was one of his finest films in recent years. A treat for all his fans, a funny film that tries and succeeds in hitting all the right notes.
In no particular order: Annie Hall, Purple Rose of Cairo, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters. My list is dumb though, as I’ve only seen about a fourth of Woody Allen’s movies, with a large slant towards his “less well received” films.
I did see Vicky Christina Barcelona though, and I thought it was, well, not so good. It just didn’t feel cinematic at all to me, more just a humorless and thoroughly unnecessary narrator telling (not showing) the audience how two American girls get from scene to scene (to scene to scene to scene.)
Recently my boyfriend has been gorging me Woody Allen films and so far I’ve loved every single one he’s told me to watch!
But with the exception that I’ve watched before hand like “Manhattan” and “Annie Hall” here are the most recent. . .

Deconstructing Harry. It’s bitter and hilarious, Woody Allen’s playing a character instead of himself (not that he changes his acting method). He finally does a drawn-out Bergman reference that works and I feel is better than the source. He says fuck instead of his overly used “make love”. The short stories interlaced throughout the movie is the most creative thing he’s done (not the jump-cuts in Husbands and Wives). Match Point was great and also very different from his usual fare which is sometimes mind-numbingly trite.
Probably Vicky Christina Barcelona and Crimes and Misdemeanors.
Luis – Sweet and Lowdown was a very nice film, but so f*ing boring I can’t start explaining how boring it was.
Doesn’t get any better than Sleeper, if you ask me. While the rest of his films are more standard to his typical theme and style Sleeper breaks free from his typical tryst/love affair with himself as himself in a familiar surrounding. I feel that Sleeper delves so much deeper into the bizarre and neurotic mind of Woody Allen without him simply portraying himself in his life with some added drama.
Annie Hall is great, but its not particular to me. The Woody Allen film I can watch the most and still get joy from is “Everyone Says I love You”…..DON’T HATE!
A lot of his other movies don’t really hold up for me. Especially Manhattan. Something about 70’s New York in black and white scope doesn’t sit right with me. I always had a soft spot for Manhattan Murder Mystery too. That one had some cool camera work. I also prefer Radio Days to Amarcord. But in general I don’t think he’s a great director, and as a matter of fact he doesn’t think so either. But his movies are fine and he can be quite brilliant. I think match point was really good until the last few minutes. That was one of his few movies that actually dealt with class issues as opposed to ignoring them or just making a joke out of them.

This answer tends to change from timre to time. Annie Hall is still an amazing film. I have recently been very into Broadway Danny Rose and Crimes and Misdemeanors. He has so many great films… a good problem to have.

Hannah and Her Sisters: My first Woody Allen film and still my favorite. It has all of his strengths and few of his weaknesses.
Crimes and Misdemeanors: Excellent. To me, this has always represented the time Woody transcended his admiration of Bergman and made something uniquely him. Not that I couldn’t see Landau’s storyline being in a Bergman film, but I feel like a lot of Woody’s movie were held back by being in Bergman’s shadow (Interiors especially). Not Crimes and Misdemeanors, though.
I’m kind of soft on Manhattan too. It was the first of his films that made me understand why he loves New York so much.
Honorable mentions: Interiors, Sleeper, Bananas. I’ve never liked Annie Hall as much as I wish I could.
Duccio Brunetti
Match Point… best thriller ever!!!
Radio Days… best comedy!!!
