House just arrived today after months of patiently waiting. I have to say it comes with one of criterion’s best booklets.

I just got back from borders where I picked up Exterminating Angel. This is my first Bunuel purchase, and the second film I’ll have seen from him. I might watch this with House on Halloween.

Eclipse & Ascent by Larisa Shepitko.

I cannot wait to own the two masterpieces by the only woman even close to agnes varda.

Well Ricky, I loved it! I’ve never really seen texture used in such a strong way. The storytelling was of course very powerful, and the dialogue was spot on. I love Oshima’s use of skewed symmetry, I believe representing the culture clash at different points of the story and of course looking beautiful. Was it wierd to you that David Bowie’s brother never really changed appearance/age, was it just how he viewed his brother, as a child, or was it just something overlooked? Maybe I’m remembering it wrong. I found that some of the music didn’t contrast well at all and was admittedly outdated, but over all I really enjoyed the film. Haven’t had the time to check out any of the special features but I’m looking forward to.

The last Criterion I purchased was the Blu-Ray edition of Hausu (1977). Waiting for Antichrist to hit shelves.

My latest is Two-Lane Blacktop – the film is great and the extras are fantastic and Warren Oates is simply stellar and incredible as GTO.

My first shipment from the B&N sale should be coming tomorrow… in it is…

House – Blu
Paths of Glory – Blu
Seven Samurai – Blu
Breathless – Blu
The Magician – Blu
Close-Up – Blu

Then when the 16th comes around my shipment of Night of the Hunter, Modern Times and Antichrist (all Blu) should be arriving.

That’s all I’ve ordered from the sale, so far (and since the BBS Blu Box isn’t discounted, it might be all).

Any suggestions? I’m looking mostly for Blu these days, but if there’s something great any of you have just picked up on DVD, too… I’m always looking for new movies to watch/buy. The only ones I’m considering right now are the Josef von Sternberg collection and Crumb and Kagemusha Blu’s… Kagemusha I’ll definitely get eventually, but don’t see it as a need it right now thing, and I haven’t seen Crumb yet, so have been holding off.

I went to the 50% off sale at B&N today and picked up the 2 films by Ozu set, Masculin Feminin, and Playtime! This sale was great, can’t wait til next year’s! I’ve been putting off Ozu for a while and I thought this would be a good first place to start, where should I go with Ozu from here? Any suggestions?

Go Floating Weeds boxset.

Joey

Erik…. Late Spring & Tokyo Story are by far among his best. Just picked up the 2films set myself about a month back and I gotta say Ozu always delivers. He’s a big influence on Jim Jarmusch especially in Stranger Than Paradise which I highly recommend.
Pre-ordered Chaplin’s Modern Times at B&N today.

I think I’ll check out the floating weeds set next then jump to Tokyo Story, then jump back to the silent ozu eclipse. Thanks for the suggestions
