Tarantino goes home empty handed? That makes me so sad.
Before the festival began, I picked Elia Suleiman’s The Time that Remains for the win. That might still be the case, though Resnais’ Wild Grass and Haneke’s The White Ribbon look promising.
looking at the panel, some have been involved in films of a violent visceral nature, plus I think the korean judge will push for Park. So i believe
winner: Antichrist
runner up : Thirst
I’d like to see Resnais or Haneke win it.
I’d be shocked to see an english film win it, but Bright Star has a very good chance. I think Vincere and The White Ribbon are good contenders.
I definitely want Almodovar to win it.
I want Enter the Void to win, I hate to set my expectations high but judging from the stills it looks mind blowing. I want to see this movie so bad the anticipation is killing me!
Wild Grass sounds like a good bet, but I think I’ll put my money on The White Ribbon. It is Haneke’s 6th film to compete at Cannes and he has yet to bring home the Palme D’or. I’d be thrilled if Antichrist won though.
I think either Vincere, Wild Grass, or A Prophet will win, only because of the content in the last few years’ winners, however I’d like to see Wild Grass win becuase it sounds cool, and Alain Resnais would be (I think) the first of the new wave french directors to ever get a deserved D’or. But I want Antichrist to win so Von Trier can indifferently accept the award while being booed, but I doubt that will happen.
Antichrist = Special Jury Prize anyone???
I think ANTICHRIST will divide the jury the same way it divided the critics.

Bright Star, Broken Embraces, and depending on the type of people on the jury maybe Antichrist are my predictions. If the new Resnais film is great then it could easily take it also.
Agreed, Clint, that Antichrist will probably get a Special Jury Prize instead of the Palm d’Or.
If ANTICHRIST won it would be hilarious.
Bright Star directed by Jane Campion about John Keats and Fanny Brawne
oh. visage. fuck everything else. I want visage to win.
has anyone here actually seen these films yet? or are we basing on previous work?
most likely, i won’t know who i think should win the palme until sometime next year…living in middle america sucks.
Bright Star, Wild Grass, White Ribbon and Un Prophete have a good chance I think… Antichrist, Thirst, Basterds may be out from what I read….
But Cannes has always been unpredictable….Antichrist might come back to win it too..never know them juries…
Antichrist, Antichrist, Antichrist – or it’s Armageddon time at Cannes! This film should win: based on the advanced hype, it’s Trier’s, it’s got the coolest still, torture porn is ‘in’ this year (see the Antichrist reaction thread).
Call it a hunch, but I think Thirsty Christ will win.
Well, Bright Star has had good reviews, and i’d like any decent film about Keats, who’s long deserved a great screen bio, to win. In today’s Independent, Geoffrey Macnab picks The Prophet, Bright Star, The White Ribbon, Enter the Void and Antichrist as his top 5, but says Antichrist got huge boos, wolf whistles. Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank has gone down well, may get some award recognition but i’d be surprised if it was the big one. I don’t know much about the Resnais, it’s not had 5 votes on imdb yet. Macnab says a jury chaired by Isabelle Huppert should help Bright Star’s chances (i’m not convinced by this idea as Huppert has taken some very challenging roles, including for Haneke, as well as costume dramas, though Campion being a woman won’t hurt her). Jamie Mattick here takes the opposite view to Macnab- that we have a more bloodthirsty jury. Haneke hasn’t won the Palme d’Or so could be a good bet, along with Bright Star. I’d be surprised if a jury was swayed by one nationalistic (eg Jamie Mattick’s Korean) voter. Films coming up at the end of competition have won before- so who knows? I’ve not followed Cannes as closely as usual. Aoaijea makes a very interesting observation about the lack of new wave directors’ Palmes d’Or at Cannes, perhaps Resnais may get a career endorsement and help make up for that?
No idea what the award buzz is here, but I’d say the Haneke, Resnais, and Audriad get major prizes.
In the absence of a clear front runner I’ll say they pick Bellochio’s “Vincere”.
The real news out of Cannes might be that Tarantino came up with something poor enough to final sink the Weinstein Company.
Wild Grass…Alain Resnais is due
Thirst
My guess is that Campion’s Bright Star, Resnais’ Wild Grass, or Haneke’s White Ribbon are the leading contenders. Which of these will win, who knows but my suspicion is that whichever wins won’t necessarily be the best film. As with all awards shows and festivals, the politicing always takes precedent. I don’t know what the competition was like last year at Cannes but I have to believe there were better films in competition over The Class and Gomorrah.
EDIT: Okay I just checked last year’s Cannes films in competition and although I haven’t seen all of them, I’ve seen most and generally they all were pretty weak. Three Monkeys was by far the strongest which means of course it didn’t win.
So this year, my vote is for Antichrist! Why not? If Slumdog Millionaire can win a Best Picture Oscar and George Bush can be elected for two terms, truly anything is possible.
Wouldn’t that be great if they said “Fish Tank”? I apologize for posting like this, but I just really want to know the outcome. Does anyone know when we’ll all know?
I believe the festival ends on Sunday so we should know by then.
Clint
I have a definite feeling it’s going to be The White Ribbon.
If not, either A Prophet, Fishtank or Bright Star.
