For me, the coffins symbolize the death of the girls' previous life (before school). I remember how during my very first year in school I've realized it will never be the same again - the absolute freedom and lack of responsibility or schedule. My general understanding of the film is that the school prepared them to be women, as in doing what a woman is expected to do by the unwritten rules of society: being gracious, visually pleasing - generally fulfilling what a woman's 'duty' people consider to be. And Bianca doesn't act against it - doesn't try to run away (or seem to want to), she's obviously attracted to men, she will be what everyone expects her to be. Have you read the book as well? does it add new meaning? i find it interesting that it's written by a man - but I doubt the film is just an 'adaptation'.
the first film i 'stole' from your favourites, Innocence, proved to be amazing :) it's so good to find another brilliant female director. glad to the see The Unscrupulous Ones in your watching list, i think more people should watch it... you will like it if you like Antonioni's Avventura or Teshigagara's Woman in the Dunes.
thanks for following back, i find your favourites very inspiring and quite different from most of the people i follow
