Hi all, currently I teach for the film studies dept at the Uni of Exeter whilst attempting to complete my PhD on Nicolas Roeg (a task that seems infinite!).
Personally Spielberg hit the right notes for me with Duel and Jaws ….. after that his sentimentality for the patriarchal family unit (as in WOTW, Schindler’s, SPR etc) became a little overbearing.
re Dystopian set films: I personally find great pleasure in the film realities of Children of Men, 28 Days Later, Battle Royale, Soylent Green and Blade Runner, Le Dernier Combat, Mad Max, Dark Star …. also Twelve Monkeys deserves a mention too ….
@ Glemaud ‘It’s not being racist when equality is wanted. Let’s look at the best actor award for this century. We have Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Jamie Foxx (Ray) and Denzel Washington (Training Day). They are all playing black people. Now, my argument is this: why can’t they play just a regular person? Why does Denzel have to be the over the top black guy, who gets stopped by the white man (Ethan Hawke)?’
Dear Glemaud, excuse my ignorance but surely the actors you cite have to play roles that depict “black people” as they themselves are black … whether the performances are over the top or not is not the point, what you seem to be implying (worryingly at best, racist at worst) is that black does not equal “regular”. Also surely DW in his role for Training Day is reprising a type of performance that is echoed in the likes of Die Hard, True Lies, Rocky etc, are these performances unproblematic (following your argument) due to the ethnicity and skin colour of the lead actors then?

you fav action ,fight and chase sequences ? over 2 years ago
action sequences I would happily (re)watch would have to include
the street gun fight from Heat;
the final police assault in Leon;
the good, the bad, the ugly (any gun fight from that)
as for fight sequences:
Kung Fu Hustle’s community battle;
Van Damme in Blood Sport
The no holds barred fight (staples and all) in The Wrestler
chase sequences … simple The Duel best chase ever …
