Paul Jazz: Filmography

Wagon Master

I have never seen this film until recently and it really is a 'hidden' gem - amazing photography and, thankfully, limited studio use - typical Ford themes and unusually no big stars, which does kind of disappoint. Still great though.

The Silence

erotic and icy at the same time - Thulin is amazing - strange to think that this kind of movie was being made at the same time as the first James Bond movies

The Silence

Still stands tall alongside many 'tough guy' movies even today (albeit with less blood or swearing). Great performances by Tracy, Ryan and Marvin, lovely panoramic photography - the low level group shots in the street are brilliant. The sense of foreboding and tension is pretty convincing too. One of my fave 'noir/westerns'

Genova

Excellent emotional drama with good use of shaky 'real' cinematography. The sense of impending doom is palpable and the gloomy and beautiful streets add greatly to the effect. For once a subtle and believable 'horror' film that connects with the emotions largely due to an amazing cast and naturalistic performances from all concerned, particularly from Firth (a nice chancge for the usual period/chickflick output) and the two young sisters. Underrated.

I Am Love

beautiful photography - even financial London looks good - Tilda is mesmerising. Not much depth maybe but I was gripped nonethless. I want to go to Italy!

The Hurt Locker

I liked the sniper scene, but the nerve-shredding tension was sadly lacking; maybe Renner just isnt a good enough actor. plus the shaky handheld camera and jump cuts are already dated and do not suggest realism - really disappointing

Antichrist

well, it looks amazing and the tribute to Tarkovsky is interesting and quite apparent, although T didnt go in for extreme slow motion shots (frankly most film students must realise that this is a cheap effect and never use it again). Sadly I was disappointed - the English speaking acting seemed so false and Gainsbourg is no Huppert. The shocking violence reminded me of Misery.

Antichrist

a lovely psycho-melodrama from Twyker. I found it moving and powerful, with some real tension, Twyker is good at the coincidence and parallel realities and this kind of relates to Run Lola run but does its own thing and does leave you guessing. Likeable characters too which always helps

Import/Export

relentlessly grim maybe - except for the glimmer of light around Olga and the people who allow her to be part of their lives - the geriatric patient for instance. The sexual content was painful to watch, the acting remarkably real. What is wrong with Austria!

Vivre sa vie

amazing cinematography, 60s Paris, beautiful Anna K, nice episodic style, interesting facts about prostitution, not too sure about the understated violence at the end but that is a trademark of the man I suppose. A little distant maybe but who can deny those iconic images?

The Virgin Spring

amazing - still packs a punch and says a lot about the nature of vengeance. A true classic in the Shakespearean sense.

The 400 Blows

still as good as ever. great natural performances by the young cast, lovely photography and nice touches to suggest the routines of everyday life. a fable for all time, cos some kids are still beng treated this badly.

In a Lonely Place

superb noir with great performances by Bogart and Grahame. The tension doesn't let up until the end, the script is packed with wit and Bogart is amazingly enigmatic throughout.

Paris

Well done Cedric - after a few lightweight offerings he has given us an engaging and emotionally charged story that really grips. The ensemble acting is good, the characters interesting and the chance encounters and links not as contrived as they could have been. Juliet B is great as usual. I thought I had worked out how it would all end, but I got it wrong - brilliant! When the cat's away is similarly impressive.

The Green Ray

as is the case with most of Rohmer's work, this has the naturalistic charm and improvised feel that makes it stand out from the rest of cinema - no cgi just 'real' people working out what life and love is all about.

Force of Evil

Just saw this for the first time - amazing photography and convincing performances, one of the best noirs ever? Probably slightly overlooked by the fact that the leading man was not Mitchum or Bogart

Persona

This is great art, with emotion - the imagery is so striking and is still being emulated by lesser mortals. check out the blurred focus effects and rapid cuts. I have ignored Bergman's work for years but now I think I almost get it.

Sideways

Brilliant - the Madsen/Giamatti chemistry works so well, it's painful to watch.

Sideways

Luminous Moreau, Great Miles Davis soundtrack - coolly assured direction, understated and inexorable, amazing really

Tropic Thunder

This should have been really good, maybe the problem is Ben Stiller directing - but I could easily just watch Downey's scenes on a continuous loop for several hours. In fact I might even copy it and edit out the rest of the film

Intimate Strangers

Another great Leconte movie - when it comes to understated eroticism and comedy, he is one of the best

Intimate Strangers

Binoche is superb. I've only seen it once, and am reluctant to see it again - truly unsettling and in ways that Wes Craven could only dream of. A horrible masterpiece?

The 39 Steps

still has the power to 'shock' after all these years - the sharp dialogue is great and some of the effects still pretty good. As usual wirth Hitch the characters tend to grip. If they remade it now it would be crude and cgi-d to death
