I think it was because of all his pent-up sexual frustration/rage/jealousy caused by his wife's job.
Just watched this and it was pretty good. I'm just kind of confused by one thing, so spoiler, why did the pool cleaner character kill that girl with a rock at the end? It seemed out of character, but maybe I missed something..

I liked the slow builld up; it was suspenseful. But the ending wasn't quite right... broke the 80's feel and ultimately fell a little flat. Still, creepy. Tom Noonan's character is very unsettling.
I saw this a couple years ago and I didn't think it was that great while watching it. It's just weird how much I find myself referencing it. From the main character's hair to the realistic mutant baby- definitely leaves an impression.
Basically Mulholland Drive on acid? Creepier and even more confusing. Definitely needs a second viewing, but that won't be for some time....
such an interesting "docu-fantasia". very mesmerizing and visually pleasing... i esp. liked the family reenactments. & the sound of guy maddin's voice. i probably will never see anything like this again.
i think i love philip seymour hoffman a little too much. without him this movie would be nothing.
