but it was shit, so why like it.
Tip: “Sophomore jinx, fuck is that? I’m gonna make Low End Theory.” Got up to dance while reciting the lyrics. The Ummah should’ve been covered, especially Dilla’s indelible mark on BR&L & Love Movement (Pharrell mentioned Jay Dee). Prince Paul, so funny. No Scenario? Nice to hear from Jarobi. Seemed like Phife was the cause for much of the drama/friction. And the look on Ali’s face said it all. Greatly enjoyed this.
This was an absolute blast. Short but very sweet. Felt just like walking/running through a "house of horrors" style amusement park attraction. Some great handheld camera work really made you feel like you were there with the characters through every abrupt twist and turn. Scary, fun and very well done. Also perfect for viewing during the eventful horror-filled month of Shocktober.
20 years later and T2 doesn't feel the least bit dated. IMO the finest American action film ever made. Flawless execution from start to finish. The 7 years b/w T1 & T2 adds to the authenticity. Even more impressive to watch as an adult (which tells me that it's not all a nostalgia kick). Love the blueish tint throughout Adore early 90s LA (arcade After Burner FTW). And as a kid, who didn't want their own Terminator?
A martial arts masterpiece-of-shit and one of the all-time best of the very worst films. I loved every exploitative minute of it (and for all the wrong reasons). Currently holding a well-deserved 2.0/10 IMDb rating. And the fantastic feature can be accessed here (in full) for your hilarious viewing pleasure: http://youtu.be/kHdYwerv0NE
Although Richard Pryor is IMO the G.O.A.T. comedian, even he didn't have a single special that was as great as "Bring The Pain", which I feel is about as perfect as stand-up comedy gets (with nary a single slow moment throughout its stacked duration). Far superior to Rock's vastly overrated (yet widely more popular) Bigger and Blacker special. "Niggaz vs. Black People" is beyond legendary. http://youtu.be/f3PJF0YE-x4
2 stars for the film. And 2 bonus stars for the ridiculous yet memorable wrestling angle that came about from this and played out on 80's WWF TV; primarily used to promote the film to all the little Hulkamaniacs (Zeus was a no-selling monster before the Undertaker made that wrestling style popular). Also, Rip (Hogan) causes a bad guy to crap his pants out of fear: http://youtu.be/edN5RbhsP2Q. Quality cinema, indeed!
Absolutely stunning to look at. And considering how much joy potatoes have given me over the years, I would probably try to marry one too.
View this film with some music playing in the background and the resulting effect makes the silent static images more interesting. Case in point, I put on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and it added a considerable layer of dread and creepiness to the film. For instance, the Penderecki pieces randomly matching up with the slow tracking shots in the narrow hallways made for an intriguing combination.
"Listen up! You racist backstabbers!" - Charlie Murphy (Chappelle's Show). 4 stars for revolutionary technical achievement (as was mentioned, the battle scenes were impressive as well as the riveting depiction of the Lincoln assassination). And minus 2 stars for irresponsibly giving the KKK a shot in the arm while reinforcing their ridiculous "mission" as guardians of the (white) south. History is a scary thing.
Happy 80th birthday to the very best ever (at everything!).
Reads like a Japanese Pink Flamingos. I must see this somehow.
"*coughing/gagging* You missed a good part." - Bellinger (Udo Kier)
Extended applause for the boardroom scene, which (thanks to The Soup) is the only part of this film that I've viewed so far (hopefully that will change in the near future).
Annalee: The climax is the most important part of this truly unique landmark British film about the horrors of religion. I can't imagine not being riveted enough by the creepy images/intriguing mystery to turn the film off prematurely. And although films are subjective, the 1 star you gave Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man is far more suited to the truly laughable remake (but to each their own). IMO, horror at its finest.
Rest in Pieces, señor.
"Richard...Harrow."
Effy!
Much like everyone else has said, Coutard's colour palette is gorgeous here; you can practically enjoy the film without sound/subtitles. Story-wise, I prefer the stylishly fresh cuteness of Pierrot Le Fou to the unbridled ultra-violence of Bonnie and Clyde. 4.75 stars (rounded up to 5). Belmondo is as cool as ever (does his own stunts). And is this where the infinite line of Anna Karina admirers begins? Perfect.
Jaws 3-D!
Mr. Koteas was indeed quite awesome in this (he was everything I had pictured Casey Jones to be in the flesh). And let's not forget a young Sam Rockwell in the small role of the head thug in charge of Shredder's entertainment playground: "Regular or menthol? *wink*". Way too many great childhood memories watching this film as well as the cartoon. So there's no way I could not give this 5 stars (and so, I did).
The Shredder!!!
I love Chocolate Mousse!
The 2010 short film Runaway. Thought it was quite good, and the music (all of it from Yeezy's upcoming LP "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy") complemented the images well. Spoiler: In particular, I enjoyed when a sampling of the track "Hell of a Life" came on during the dinner scene when the phoenix flips out. Watch the 35 minute short in its entirety, commercial-free and in HD here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7W0DMAx8FY
Well, at the time of my initial post, the album had not been released yet and (as a fan of Ye's work since the year 2000) I was highly anticipating the new recording. In addition, the sleek but masturbatory Runaway film did its job in maintaining that hype for me. 15 months later and the music from MBDTF still bangs, however I would place the somewhat bloated LP right smack dab in the middle of Mr. West's studio album discography. As for Runaway, I still like it. Why? Because although it is essentially an overlong music video, it doesn't try to be anything else but an elaborate visual narrative sampler for the album (which in that sense it works effectively). Also, when it comes to music videos, rarely do I look for substance anyway since style (and promoting the studio recording) is the name of the game. And I think we can all agree that Runaway has style in spades (for better or for worse). Hopefully that answered your blunt inquiry. And thanks for the like, dust in love!
I just got gorgonized...and I loved it! Thanks TCM!
A undeniable fall/winter classic. Still patiently waiting on the sequel.
Loved it in all its hacking geekery glory (which, as a former comp-sci turned econ major, I understood a fair share of). 4.37 stars for me (still in dire need of half stars on MUBI). What Fight Club was to us Gen-X's, TSN is to the current gen. Fincher has that unique ability to capture the times so accurately. And the Reznor score was dope. Next up: The Tumblr movie directed by Darren Aronofsky (or so I wish).
I actually prefer this sequel to Excellent Adventure. It's darker (the nightmare/hell sequences actually bothered me as a kid) and I loved the references to Star Trek: TOS and The Seventh Seal (although I would only understand this one as an adult). Looking forward to the very recently confirmed and long-awaited upcoming completion of the Bill & Ted trilogy!
Although I refuse to subject myself to the punishment of actually watching this painfully superfluous music video, I've always wanted to give that annoyingly fabricated Gaga phony a negative rating somehow. And now I finally can (in the form of 1 overrated star). Thanks MUBI country! And do keep the music videos coming as I look forward to using this rating tactic to express my dislike for many so-called "artists".
I hear ya. It's the only Twilight that interests me, namely seeing the context of THAT scene as it pertains to the entire film (hence this recent watchlist inclusion). But until then, I'll just have to keep viewing THAT scene. Also: sweet Reese was in adorably FINE form throughout the entire 1990s. But currently, the MUBIdb is still missing her impressive film debut (which just happened to be on in HD last night).
"Oh...FUCK!" (c) Yeez. Just re-watched this and I love it even more. Also, I'm not ashamed to say that I've acted this way in the clubs on a few occasions (sorry, random people). Well, save for what happened in the washroom, that is. I'll always associate this short film and the 808s album with Kanye's 2-year drunken stumble into the pop culture doghouse. And now I'm in the mood for a nice tumbler of Henrock on ice.
