I thought Synedoche New York was a big let-down. I love Charlie Kaufman’s other films, but for some reason I found it uninvolving and pretentious. Someday I’ll try to give it another chance.
Fights in real life are much more messier and chaotic, usually with the two people ending up writhing on the ground like animals. One of the few realistic movie fights is the brief throwdown between Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger in Platoon.
On an artistic level, the film is an amazing tour-de-force. But on a historical level, it’s pretty bad.
Gary Oldman was great as Lee Oswald. That guy is an amazing chameleon.
I’m going to keep it real with you and not pretend to know anything about Costa-Gavras. But by “artistic level” I mean the editing, cinematography, acting, music, atmoshere, etc. Seeing it on blu-ray certainly helps, too.
For the no-bullshit historical details, check out “Beyond Conspiracy: JFK” and “The Real Lee Harvey Oswald” History Channel clips on youtube.
Even other JFK conspiracy theorists have objected to some of the liberties Stone took, but that’s not the point.
The point is that you don’t go to an Oliver Stone film for rock-solid history, but for his powerful vision. His filmmaking style is to manipulate the audience and to drill into people’s heads in un-subtle ways what he wants to convey in the stories that he tells. It’s not a knock on him, it’s just that he doesn’t like to leave room for much ambiguity in his films…that’s just his style. The Doors and Nixon aren’t meant to be docudramas. Hell, by his own admission he even took liberties with a film based on his own experiences in Vietnam.
Jack F,
Point taken, but Val Kilmer was so amazing as Jim Morrison and it stands alongside Apocalypse Now as the penultimate cinematic use of “The End.”
Wow, I never thought I’d be seeing a topic about Ninja Turtles in one of these forums!
I would’ve been excited about this back in the early 90s, but I’m willing to save judgement until the thing comes out. I rewatched the first 2 Turtle movies recently and the first one wasn’t QUITE as painful as I feared it would be, unlike other childhood films I revisited. I forgot that Elias Koteas was in it, and if you don’t blink there’s a young SAM ROCKWELL as one of the teenage thugs!
yes, 2001 is for sure at the top of the list. What makes the Dawn of Man sequence even more impressive is that it was all filmed on a sound stage with front projection screens!
Uh, NO it is not “playstastion grade” CGI…far from it, especially in 3D. It’s not photorealistic but it’s pretty damn close, and beautifully detailed from what I saw.
I saw the footage and was very impressed. Finally, a filmmaker is going to try to take us to another Earth-like planet…unlike the ecosystem-less worlds of Star Wars and other movies.
Funny how all the naysayers here are the ones who only saw the trailer which featured shots that AREN’T EVEN COMPLETED YET. With the exception of Roger Ebert, most people were impressed by the 16-minute preview…even those that were quick to dismiss it after just seeing the trailer.
So again I ask WHO ELSE HERE HAS ACTUALLY SEEN THE 3D PREVIEW?
A friend and I watched DUNE the other night on a hash brownie…holy fucking shit. I’ve seen this movie countless times since I was kid, but seeing it on hash was like seeing it for the first time. The visuals were so dense and surreal, and the giant worms looked so phallic and hilarious. It bordered on the immersive, and is an experience I’ll never forget. I HIGHLY recommend you all try it.
Eat a brownie, wait an hour, then watch it on a bigass screen in 5.1 surround sound.
I guess it’s safe to assume that, out of all the films listed, most of us can agree on ALTERED STATES…still waiting for the blu-ray BTW. I think next time my friend and I will watch 2001 on cosmic brownies.
Oh, another film to mention is Roger Corman’s THE TRIP with Peter Fonda…and a script by Jack Nicholson.
Hopefully Black Dynamite will get a wider release, but in the meantime I’ve been playing around with the “Black Dynamite Yo’ Self” feature at the official site, which allows you to upload a pic of yourself and add silly 70s hairstyles and accessories to it: http://blackdynamiteyoself.com/
However, for the purposes of this forum I think it’s even funnier to “Black Dynamite” pictures from classic movies. For example, I made 2001 a lot more funky:

Dune begs for a proper extended version, not that Allan Smithee abortion. Imagine if Criterion treated this film like a lost Orson Welles classic.
