Dang. Raising Arizona is my personal favorite. I certainly respect your sentiments, but I feel like there is a tendency – on this website – to ignore the “Breakout” film regardless of its brilliance. I personally feel like William H. Macy’s performance in Fargo is next level and Fargo is a better film than Blow-Out, Excalibur, 39 Steps, Magnolia, and several other films left on the list.
I will agree that the Man Who Wasn’t There is a great film, and while the narrative is more nuanced than Fargo, it does not make it better.
Much like Pulp Fiction, it seems like a target for target-sake. Because my mom has seen it doesn’t make it overrated!
Agreed There Will Be Blood is epic, however there are several films more worthy of a negative vote than Rosemary’s Baby (one of the most amazing, patient horror films ever made) and 3 Women (Altman’s best!).
Understood. I just can’t help feel that Rosemary/3 Women are far superior to films like Fire Walk with Me, Unforgiven, Holy Grail, American Graffiti, Raiders of the Lost Ark (seriously).
Brad, don’t great films transcend genre? Are you of the opinion that the films I listed are much better than Rosemary/3 Women? Do you feel like the characters developed are more unique or important in film history. Would you consider the fact that Rosemary/3 Women include interesting use of female characters that move beyond basic stereotypes – something American films are in need of.
I love an entertaining movie, but I remain unconvinced that Raiders of the Lost Ark is as essential as 3 Women. Of course this is what is cool and frustrating about this exercise.
As there has been some discourse regarding motivation regarding votes I am curious if anyone is interested in taking the I will not + or – the same film more than once (sorry weird sentence)? This may get impossible as I am determined to not vote against anything I have not seen, however it is kinda fun to not repeat as there are so many cool, intelligent, and worthy films.
Agreed that 2001 went down way to early. That makes no sense. Though I am sad to see Five Easy Pieces go. Love Jack’s performance in that one though the premise is almost disgustingly masculine.
