It’s the power of suggestion. If your peers (ie anyone interested in the aforementioned films) think The Godfather, 2001 and Seven Samurai are fantastic films, and you wish to be more interested in films and filmmaking, you tend to like them too. Humans tend to replicate examples of their ideal self when adapting to a new environment, similar to the way we look at people holding chopsticks to learn how to use chopsticks.
It’s only after we have the foundation, after our parents have shown us The Godfather because they love it themselves and learn to love it ourselves too, that we can build towards our own individual tastes.
