An experiment (sort of) almost 3 years ago

Not easy to restrict oneself to ten personal favorites, with such a great year for filmmaking…

1. C’era una volta il West (Sergio Leone)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick)
3. Teorema (Pier Paolo Pasolini)
4. Petulia (Richard Lester)
5. Diabolik (Mario Bava)
6. The Mercenaries (Jack Cardiff)
7. Engelchen oder Die Jungfrau von Bamberg (Marran Gosov)
8. Un soir, un train (André Delvaux)
9. Abschied (Egon Günther)
10. Il grande silenzio (Sergio Corbucci)

Top Films of 2009 - so far almost 3 years ago

From everything I watched at local theatres or film festivals in 2009, those ten are my favorites up to now (in no particular order):

When it was Blue (Jennifer Reeves)
Jerichow (Christian Petzold)
The Sky Crawlers (Mamoru Oshii)
A Week Alone (Celina Murga)
Two Lovers (James Gray)
Lunch Break (Sharon Lockhart)
To Die Like a Man (João Pedro Rodrigues)
Achilles and the Tortoise (Takeshi Kitano)
Pink (Rudolf Thome)
Juntos (Nicolás Pereda)

Another ten (or let’s make it eleven) movies I liked very much:

Glowing Stars (Lisa Siwe)
The Mermaid and the Diver (Mercedes Moncada Rodríguez)
Changeling (Clint Eastwood)
35 Shots of Rum (Claire Denis)
Revanche (Götz Spielmann)
Huacho (Alejandro Fernández Almendras)
Claustrophobia (Ivy Ho)
The Wrestler (Darren Aronofsky)
Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood)
Vinyan (Fabrice Du Welz)
Hooked (Adrian Sitaru)

What is the greatest film title ever? almost 3 years ago

Grindhouse and exploitation movies are always a wonderful source for great titles. The following one from a Ray Dennis Steckler movie is not easy to beat: “The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies”

And one Fassbinder film has a very long and fascinating original german title: “Fontane – Effi Briest oder: Viele, die eine Ahnung haben von ihren Möglichkeiten und Bedürfnissen und dennoch das herrschende System in ihrem Kopf akzeptieren durch ihre Taten und es somit festigen und durchaus bestätigen”, which means something like: “Fontane – Effi Briest or: Many who have an inkling of their possibilities and needs and yet accept the ruling system in their minds through their deeds and thus strengthen and confirm it”. Seems like a possible contender for longest title ever…

Drew,

that’s extremely long, but has still about 30 letters (or one word, if you count that way) less than the complete title of the Fassbinder.
I found another very long title that even beats the Fassbinder by four words (but doesn’t if you’re counting by letters, which I consider to be a more appropriate way of comparison): “Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Flesh-Eating Subhumanoid Zombified Living Dead, Part 3”. And another movie of the same director has a complete title that’s even a bit longer, being mostly the same but ending with “…Zombified Living Dead, Part 2: In Shocking 2-D” – quite impressive, but regarding the number of letters it’s still not reaching the Fassbinder.

Drew, maybe at least a honorable number two, with “Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Flesh-Eating Subhumanoid Zombified Living Dead, Part 3” seeming to be the longest one without an extra something after a colon.
