I am a big fan of Hedgehog and Tales. I noticed that I could not include him with the other auteurs I picked for my profile. I was very suprised at this for I thought he was considered by many to be the greatest animator of all time.
The critics didn’t like it because there were spiritual motifs throughout the film…what one might consider new age even. And it certainly is in vogue to wear your atheist pin with pride.
I love the film though. Christianity didn’t ruin God for me.
I am speaking about Yuri Norstein, the Russian animator that brought us ‘Hedgehog in the Fog’ and ‘Tale of Tales’. Has anyone seen these films here? I noticed one other person posting about the same thing months back so I am going to post again to show that there is an audience for this filmmaker.
‘Tale of Tales’ has twice been considered the “greatest animated film of all time” by a large international panel. (L.A. Olympic Arts Fest 1984, Zagreb World Fest for Animated films 2002)
‘Hedgehog in the Fog’ has been considered the “Number 1 animated film of all time”. (Tokyo All Time Animation Best 150 in Japan and Worldwide 2003)
I know that this is just the opinion of critics and why should we care…well, I actually agree with them this time so I thought that it might make my case a little stronger. You can see both of them on Google Video or Youtube and it will only take about 40 minutes of your time. Time well spent to be sure.
more than that i hate the words “self indulgent”. as if the artist was supposed to get art from somewhere other than the self and then refrain from indulging.
I remember being a bit naive about cinema. There was a time when I only cared about James Cameron and other blockbuster films (I am looking forward to Avatar). I was a movie lover to be sure but I had never heard of Godard or Cassavetes or Matthew Barney etc. One day in about 1994-95 I decided to rent my first foreign language film. I was against this for I felt, like a lot of people, that it would be impossible to watch the movie if I had to read the bottom of the screen. But there was a film in Blockbuster that had such an irresistable cover that I just had to rent it. I had been eyeing it for a couple of weeks and I finally broke down and got it. It was Krzysztof Kieslowski’s last film "Three Colors: Red. The first time I tried to watch it I fell asleep and I just assumed that I had been right all along. For some reason I decided to give it a second try and after it was finished my sense of cinema was changed forever.
harmony korine’s $120mil untitled 3-d project about the the inhabitants of an asylum on a different planet. the plot is: a group of humanoid creatures break out of an asylum and go on the road to do a show they had been practicing back in the asylum for many moons. james cameron has been assisting korine on this project on and off for 3 years. the non actors plucked off the streets of nashville work with the new technology in a way that couldn’t have been forseen.
did anyone see that interview at cannes with lars von trier and his two stars from antichrist? mofo’s voice is fluttering. he can’t relate to the questions. he is fidgety and looking all around. and he said that he made his new film to help himself get out of a dark time in his life. if he is still having a hard time after so much international success it is probably safe to say that he will always be at least a little f’d up.
the funnel metaphor is brilliant! “it can make an audience stay with things they may not have thought they would have liked” it deserves to be typed again!
i would say an extreme example of the ‘funnel’ method would be Hideaki Anno’s ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’. anybody that was slightly familiar with anime conventions would understand what was going on at the begining of the series. it just looked like a typical ‘boy pilots mech’ series. so anybody who liked that genre could follow it into the psychedelic mind f^ck it eventually turned into later in the series.
Just saw Werkmeister Harmonies… truly great film. And I am sure I am not the first one to bitch about the white skinny small subtitles in the Facets release, some of which are totally unreadable. I really feel like buying a Hungarian version of the film, loading it into Premeire CS4, re-subtitling the film in yellow larger titles and giving it away free from some website. Does anyone know if there is a better version out there or if one is in the works?
