1. Citizen Kane
2. Psycho (was there a true slasher film before this?)
3. Stagecoach (you need a Ford on this list, so this or the Searchers)
4. Star Wars
5. The Godfather
6. Pulp Fiction (sorry I had to add one more, but has there been a more influential US film over the last 15 years??)
Do I dare say Tron? Unless you are either 8 years old or under influence of certain natural stimulants, the movie is unwatchable…I can’t wait for the sequel though…
I knew Tron would touch a nerve. Let me ask all the Tron fans, when was the last time you actually watched it? When the 25th anniversary addition came out, I was so excited, but when I actually put it on, I couldn’t even get through Ram’s demise before I fell asleep. The effects were groundbreaking for its time and it does have some very cool geek moments, but it really is not a good movie (ok so maybe unwatchable was a bit harsh)…
Also, I have to agree that Starship Troopers should not be mentioned in this thread, if you know anything about Verhoven’s background you realize that the film was a clever critique of society’s willingness to except a totalatarian based government in the face of conflict. And the fact that he put Doogie Howser and 90210 alums in SS uniforms was genius!!! Now the sequels on the other hand…
Oh wait, does anyone remember a little in-line skating movie called Airborne? Basically a surfer kid from California moves into his Aunt and Uncle’s house in Cleveland and tries to win over the kids at the local high school with his eastern-zen ways. But in the end it all comes down to a 15 minutes in-line skating race down a very steep hill…featuring a young Jack Black and Seth Green…terrible but highly rewatchable…
Well…the decade is technically almost over, but I guess the best could still sneak through in the final months. But I am really enjoying all of the love for Eternal Sunshine that is probably in my top 5 with City of God, Children of Men, the Incredibles and my favorite…In the Mood for Love.
There have been many great ones mentioned here, but can we get some love Comedy? There have been some great ones over the last few years particularly coming from the Apatow camp, 40 Year Old Virgin was probably my favorite. My least favorite, probably Superbad, it was just too derivative for me…
