Hi, as you can see my name is Josh I’m 18 and live in New York [state, not the city ;) ]. Films are one of the things I love the most, along with books, art, history, etc. I’ve seen quite a few films compared to most people I think, but I really have to catch up esp. on foreign films. A friend of mine on YouTube recommended it and after reading some posts yesterday I decided to join.
BTW, I have a question and if anyone could answer it I’d appreciate it alot. I keep trying to list some of my favorite directors on my profile but they don’t seem to show up, does anyone know what to do?
Here are some films I think are pretty underrated:
Hitchcock: Foreign Correspondent, Suspicion, I Confess, The Trouble with Harry
Coen Brothers: Barton Fink, O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Scorsese: Casino
Welles: The Trial
Does anyone else think that the overlooked films are more interesting that a director’s ‘bigger’ achievements?
I haven’t seen Chopper yet, but Jesse James was an extremely well-accomplished film. While it may still be early, you don’t make a film like that without having ‘some’ talent. ;)
On a sidenote, as mentioned he’s done a script for a McCarthy novel and I noticed it seemed he [McCarthy] is getting quite a bit of screen time these days. The Coens’ No Country, the soon to be released The Road, and I read that an adaptation of Blood Meridian is coming up soon.
I only found out about Mann sometime within the last year, probably less and Public Enemies the first film of his I’ve seen. Maybe it’s because of that I enjoyed it so much, though it was flawed but I’d say it’s at least an 8/10. Sometime after that I got Miami Vice on DVD and while I didn’t love it as much I definitely think it’s a superior film. I thought the ending was much stronger as well.
Like alot of people have mentioned, ‘cause his films are about ’men at work’, the characters in his films to me are reminiscient of Howard Hawks. I just got The Insider today which will hopefully secure Mann as another favorite. :)
Don’t know if there’s a topic on this, wouldn’t doubt it, but what are ten ‘new’ [anything you haven’t seen] films you’d love to see at the moment?
Barry Lyndon (Kubrick, 1974)
Chinatown (Polanski, 1974)
Mahler (Russell, 1974)
Manhunter (Mann, 1986)
Vincent & Theo (Altman, 1990)
The Insider (Mann, 1999)
The Piano Teacher (Haneke, 2001)
Time of the Wolf (Haneke, 2003)
The New World (Malick, 2005)
Youth Without Youth (Coppola, 2007)
I think Spielberg gets so much flak from film buffs and critics that he’s ‘almost’ becoming gasp underrated. He’s definitely on an interesting streak at the moment. Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, and Munich [from what I’ve seen] show an evolution in style.
I don’t know if I’d say Mann’s overrated, I’ve only seen two films of his [Miami Vice and Public Enemies] which I thought were both pretty decent, they had their good and bad qualities but were enjoyable for me overall. PE is about 50/50 critically, but among the public alot of people make it sound much worse than it is, imo.
For me, I guess films [along with a number of other things] just make all the shit people deal with bearable and for a certain few [films that is] I’d say teach me about all the different types of human behavior.
I hope that’s not more pretentious than I wanted it to sound. :D
Well, like I said I had read so many bad reactions to the film [via IMDb] that I went in expecting something much worse. I didn’t think it was flawless, but what I didn’t like was greatly outweighed by what I did.
Josh Ryan: That’s what I’ve heard and I can’t wait to watch it tonight. I saw the trailer online quite awhile ago, but it wasn’t that great. [But then, trailers rarely are].
Banal1: That’s what I love about some of my favorite films, that the whole thing is designed to create an atmosphere that is more often than not independent of reality [even if it’s based in it]. :)
I caught a part of it on TV once, but not for long. The photography [esp. the color] is what attracts me the most, to be honest. I must warn everyone, I am virtually obsessed with photography so I may very well go on and on about it, possibly unnecessarily, in some cases. ;)
Actually it’s not the music itself that bothers me, though it’s a bit traditional for a film like that, it’s the way it was used. Sometimes it just came in and ate up a scene like a Daniel Day-Lewis performance.
Fredo: Well if those are the qualifications of PE fan, I don’t know how I possibly liked it!
Matt Parks: I do too, but I never felt it was as bad as people made it out to be. I really wonder if I saw a different film completely. ;)
Zachary: For me PE was basically a portrait of Dillinger, not like a biopic that ‘covers’ a period of time but a film that captures a man at a specific place and time relatively unchanged. What do you mean by mood of hype, btw?

I’ve been very curious about Antichrist, despite the graphic scenes it seems much more interesting than most horror films today.

Ha-ha! Four posts in and someone says Spielberg, I’d have expected it sooner.
He’s not a favorite of mine yet, but I don’t mind him.
