"the fawning and gushing of so many astute critics who have greeted this plodding melodrama with raves on the film-festival circuit mystifies me." --> me too Rex Reed, me too.
Performances were spot on -- so much amazing chemistry between these three "nonactor" teens. Orgamiscally photographed on 35mm...can't wait for the world to witness this masterpiece from Lucy! x
"No one discriminates against excellence"
lovely short by an immensely talented filmmaker. Rungano is certainly one to watch.
He's a looker too.
To call this refreshing would be a vast understatement. I loved every single character in this menagerie. Thank you Taika, for giving us a glimpse into your cooky world.
Beautiful cinematography: convincing performances: that's about it. Anticipating what we already know. Boring beauty. Annoying unsympathetic characters who never reeled me in. Once again I'm left to wonder whether I'm the only one who doesn't get the hype.
very touching.
"Is Curtis mad, or is he prescient? You can debate this question when the movie is over — the brilliant final scene invites as much — but you are unlikely to find a comfortable answer. The real question is what difference it makes. ... There is no shortage of delusion and paranoia out there in the world. There is also a lot to be afraid of. "
Certainly a stand out film with stand out performances but not quite as resonant and amazing as I'd heard: I was moved by the following review:
lovely! This is not "black cinema" this is universal cinema.
I am stumped as to why this is an Oscar contender: unsympathetic characters, tonal inconsistencies (is it a comedy? Is it a dramedy? Oh wait, now it's a dark comedy! Uh was I supposed to laugh?)-- Some dry delivery to accompany the dry dialogue ( I read the script first). Vanilla as hell with vanilla sprinkles on top and vanilla syrup served to you in a vanilla cone. -4 stars.
I am a fan of Naranjo's: not his latest film. I can't accurately articulate WHY said film did not resonate with me and I found this reviewer's critique quite apt: "these ideas are so embedded in a dizzying narrative that's conveyed by ultra-immersive technique that they register more like stray bullets that seem to be coming at you from every direction--they have impact, sure, but you're not exactly tracking them.'
Disappointed in the performances and overall execution but can't deny this is a classic and def paved the way for filmmakers such as myself.
I'm a huge stan of Tom Hardy but this film was way too predictable. Nick Nolte was foreshadowed as the clear good guy from the get go; pretty strong performances from all. Accents slipped here and there (which worked for some odd reason)...
Way too many holes in this script, but somehow I managed to moderately enjoy it.
I can't find this film anywhere. I really want to see it. First film commisioned by a major studio for an African American Female Writer/Director.
Really guys? It left me emotionless and detached from the very characters I was supposed to care about. The newly feminized Vincent struck a few emotional cords but Banderas' lackluster performance did nothing for me. Yes, Almodovar is a master of seamlessly forging elements of melodrama, production design and music; however for this particular effort I'm disappointed. Most importantly the credits rolled too soon.
Two words: Sound Design. Lynne Ramsay has always payed special attention to the sound in her films and WNTTAK was no exception: beautifully crafted--she's one of those filmmakers who premeditates and plans painstakingly and it's evident in every singe frame. The kid who played KEVIN has a mesmerizing face. Every frame he filled was magnetic. Lovely Lovely piece.
<3 adorable.
aborted mission about half way through. COME ON MOODYSSON! I love you but...
I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed Another Earth...I'm just sayin ; / It was surprisingly funny and for some odd reason, as a current teaching artist, I identified with our protagonist...minus the fake tits goal.
Great premise. Great opening. Second Act dragged...after which I was just waiting for the film to end.
The biracial kids were PERFECT. Everything else was just dressing. Surprised at how endearing this film was.
no still no reviews?! What in the world...and these related films? This is a travesty.
This stayed with me.
Horrible. Terrible. Recast this with actors other than caucasians and it wouldn't get a 10 second nod from Cannes...
Really well written IMO: I loved how each character was like a pinball directly effecting the others. True Ensemble Acting.
A.O Scott from NY Times hit the nail on the head "Drive” is somber, slick and earnest, and also a prisoner of its own emptiness, substituting moods for emotions and borrowed style for real audacity." There's no denying masterful execution; however I felt zero emotional connection w any of the chars. Also Mulligan was miscast and I wasn't surprised to later learn that her role was originally for a Latina in her 20s
Black white yellow orange purple--rich or poor: we all deal with the same subtleties of impending infidelities. I had zero expectations, which is probably why I was so pleasantly surprised. Kiera usually does zero for me with her pouty face, but in this film her facial contortions actually worked out. Wish there was more balance in screentime for the two infidelities...
