CINEMA: the archaeology of film and the memory of a century)
I’d agree with those who mention the seminal films that took things beyond the labyrinthine fragmentations of Film Noir:
Last Year In Marienbad (Alain Resnais)
Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway (Lynch’s boldest shattering of narrative conventions)
Vertigo (which is always quoted by writers and film-makers like Lynch and Chris Marker in La Jetée)
Rashomon
Performance
Bad Timing
Code Unknown (so fresh and captivating as a cinematic experience…for me in 2000)
Also, there’s interesting films that self-consciously refer to tampering with time like Primer (2005/6 inspired by The Parallax View) and Timecrimes (2008).
I was really impressed by Jacques Audiard’s Regarde Les Hommes Tomber (1994) a pursuit across France that nimble skips back and forth between pursued and pursuers’ time frames until eventually the two narrative strands/ time frames converge towards the end. It is strengthened by director Audiard, who was first both a writer and an editor and often makes unusual leaps and elisions in his narratives.
It tickles me that this film was shot at The Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia on the Vitosha Mountainside studio set, just up the road from me, with production design by Dante Ferretti http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0274721/ … so I’m really intrigued to finally see the film.
I spoke to the Studio CEO, former production designer David Varod and he refers to this film as being representative of the excellent ‘production value’ attainable at the studio facilities here in Bulgaria. Peter Weir also recently shot his latest film The Way Back here.

MICRO-BUDGET BRILLIANCE: TELL ME ABOUT A GREAT SMALL FILM I DON'T KNOW over 3 years ago
Alongside a broad cinematic taste I love films made with limited means but unlimited ideas: HUMBLE MAGNIFICENCE!
I would love to hear any suggestions of classics or contemporary micro-budget films I’m less likely to have heard about.
PARTICULARLY WORLDWIDE, UNUSUAL OR OFFBEAT MAVERICKS (with the pre-election credibility of that term).
I’m compiling a list which is mostly micro-budget films I like from the 1960’s/70’s/80’s/90’s/2000’s
but I’m open to any era including the future :)
Here’s a few:
25 WATTS
Año Uño (Year of the Nail)
ERASERHEAD
FATE (Fred Kellemen)
JE TU IL ELLE
LONDON TO BRIGHTON
PRIMER
SHIFTY
STRANGER THAN PARADISE
TRASH
Cheers,
Tom
