do you remember that scene in the coffee house when she said "i like madonna and nirvana, who had an overdose" and the started to scream "blaaaaa" :D man, i laughed :D oh and i really liked music. and you said how he was brave to make a film like that. well, i agree, it's one of those films playing on the edge. i like that, it worked perfectly for me in this case.
Ha ha:-) Yeah, that scene really got me to. Never thought I would laugh so much through the film. Probably the only Zulawski where I`ve felt that way. Have you seen The Devil? Think thats my second favorite Zulawski. It does not play on the edge in that way, more straight bleak stuff.
Wow. Thats so cool. Hope you like them both! I struggled a lot with On the Silver Globe. I can see there is so much good in there, like the story which has lots of potential, gorgeous production design, and at times thematic interesting. The entire thing is so ambitious, and daring, that I kinda liked it on the premiss that it exist. But I would be lying, if I said I thought it was good. I didn't find the characters or the drama compelling. And the countless staring into nothing and holding a philosophical monolog scenes, became very tedious. Szamanka manages to be both pretentious, and the contrary at the same time. But for me On The Silver Globe became only pretentious in the uninspired way. Maybe it was just a little too hyped. Reading the MUBI comments, you kinda expect something which is impossible to experience:-( But I might change my opinion, if I get the strength to watch it again. But I am afraid I never will:-) Why didn't you like it?
i also did like some parts (especially some mad camera moves), but set design, costumes and story - nope. you said "And the countless staring into nothing and holding a philosophical monolog scenes, became very tedious." and summed up pretty well what i felt. like repeating without saying anything. story itself had a potential tho, but not the way it was developed, imo. too complex for what we got (at least what i've got, which isn't much). there were moments when i thought "ok, this is becoming better", but unfortunately those moments didn't last long. and, yeah, i don't think i'll re-watch it :p
Glad you enjoy my list! But I really should narrow it down a bit. Your favorites are impressive as well. I've been meaning to see MIDORI soon. Any pre-viewing advice?
Thank you. Hmmm, pre viewing advice. Do you mean like preparations before watching? If thats the case, you should eat before you watch it, because its sometimes quite disgusting. The director originally only wanted to have the film screened along with a performance containing a live concert and a circus act. Its a shame its not possibly to watch the film in that context:-) If you meant other film tips, you can watch before that. SHURA from 1971, would be a vaguely thematically related good flick to watch.
You definitely should check it out. So far one of the best i´ve seen this year. Please tell me what you think afterwards.
Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the follow:-) Want to catch all his stuff eventually. Haunting imagery. The Ring is just branded upon my brain. Do you have a favorite by him?
Death is in the air as you watch Harlan County USA. The film follows the miners of Harlan County as they go on a strike. The last time there was a strike in Harlan County, the situation caused a lot… read review
