I just have to jump into this, because I feel like I’m always trying to defend Die Hard 2 from the majority of my cinephile friends, all of whom think this sequel is varying degrees of, uh, suck-itude. I don’t think this is superior to the original, by any means…but, in its own breezy and self-mocking way, I don’t think it’s really trying to be. If anything, it’s so relentlessly self-aware of how ridiculous it all is that it almost demands that we not take it as seriously as we all took the original. That’s pretty much how I look at Die Hard 2…so I can bask in its relentless pace and its violent, boundary-pushing excesses without (too much) guilt.
