Oh god this makes me so sad. What a terrific writer.
NO FILM ADAPTATIONS. I think that if someone wants to make The Catcher in the Rye as a movie or whatever, make something inspired by it. Kind of like Wes Anderson’s movies inspired by Salinger or the movie Igby Goes Down (I haven’t seen it but I hear it’s very catcheresque).
Exactly, he’s inspired a ton of people and they’ve made great work from the inspiration (whether big or small).
I still think that his stuff shouldn’t be touched though because he didn’t want it to.
Malick could do a good Catcher in the Rye, that’s true.
But still.
For Christmas when I was 12 my dad got me Catcher in the Rye. I was at a resort in the Dominican Republic when I read it, and I once I had started reading I hardly did anything for a couple days until I finished it.
I loved it so much.
I also went on a trip to New York City once, and I was in Central Park with my little sister, and we saw the carousel and she wanted to go on, so she did and I watched her go around. It felt straight from the book and it was a perfect moment.
I don’t mean to jump in here, but when I was in New York I saw the McDonagh play “A Behanding in Spokane”. It starred Zoe Kazan, Sam Rockwell, Anthony Mackie, and Christopher Walken. Needless to say it was pretty fantastic.
I waited outside to meet the cast but it was raining and they chose to stay inside for the night show, thoooouuugh I did get to have a conversation with Christopher Walken’s stylist, which was pretty cool.
Anyways, Zoe Kazan was great in it. I really can’t wait to see The Exploding Girl.
It was before. I’m reading the book Correspondence 1945-1984, which is a collection of Truffaut’s many letters sent to people throughout those years.
And yeah, he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. It really surprised me :(
It is terrible! :( He seemed like an overall happy person though.
I would definitely recommend the book! I’m not very far into it but so far it’s A-mazing. I love Truffaut.
Josh S: That’s a great way to put it, I totally agree! AHHH I’ve only seen………….
………….this is a confession……………..
3 Truffaut films
But I have LOVED every single one of them in a way that once you finish them you just completely love everything and feel magnificent and want to go out and make movies. But I desperately need to see more.
What two have you seen Josh S?
And what should I see next guys? The three I’ve seen are: The 400 Blows, Jules and Jim, and Day for Night.
Loved them all, 10/10. I’m nervous to see anything else because I have such a good feeling about Truffaut right now and I don’t want it to be broken…
Awesome, so I’ve got that to look forward to! Another problem is finding his films… because Youtube is just so blah for watching movies and Blockbuster is lacking in their Truffaut section.
I read that The Story of Adele H. first inspired Eva Green to become an actress :) Good stuff.
I live in Canada so I lose out on the awesomeness of Netflix. You USAers shouldn’t take it for granted.
I mean I get Zip.ca but I remember researching before and it seemed really sketchy…
Yeah that was a joke, Blockbuster does not have Truffaut at all. Unless you count Close Encounters of the Third Kind…
Who lives in Florida? I love Florida.
Canada is cool I guess, I mean I shouldn’t be complaining at all, but I just generally feel kind of sour towards it.
I feel like I should be from Europe. I picture people from France just sitting around smoking, reading literature, and talking about cinema. That would be more like it.
Why would you take Canada in a heartbeat? I’m genuinely interested.
Yeah I thought you meant someone lived there, oh why do you hate Florida? I don’t know much about it to be honest but I’ve been there a few times and you know… it’s hot and touristy and just really appealing.
Yeah, I think it is a lot like New York landscape and climate-wise in parts of Canada like Ontario (where I reside) and Quebec, but there are some really far north parts that are obviously different.
I just don’t feel much affinity with my homeland… oh well. I threaten to run away and begin my trek to some European country like Sweden before most of my math classes.
Yeah, nowhere hotter than New York would probably get to.
I would like to go to France and Italy most I think, but I just go on crazy rants at school… “I’m just going to start walking to Sweden and I’ll work on a farm and I will never have to be in this stupid place again”
I guess, but why does it have to be a dream? Why does everything have to be so normal and predictable? Ugggghhhhh I know I probably just sound whiny but it gets to me. I want my life to be an adventure.
So I watched Eyes Wide Shut last night and loved loved loved it. Anyone have anything to say about that? :D
Yeah I want to travel more in-country too, at least more in Quebec and British Columbia. That would probably prove easier than walking to Sweden, but whatever :)
What did I love about Eyes Wide Shut? The tracking shots, the score and lack of score at points, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, the last dialogue, and the fact that I have no idea what it was about. It’s just so- you can’t look away… the house ritual orgy scene…………….. SO GOOD

Truffaut tried to kill himself in his early 20s, not a lot of people know that.
