I have been looking forward to this movie primarily because it has my favorite Indian actor “Irffan Khan” while two segments of the movie have been directed by Indian directors. I am however doubtful about the implementation of the movie considering that its a project with many different stories by different directors woven into one. Some time back such kind of experimentation with different directors was done in one Indian movie which bombed at Box Office. But then “New York, I Love You” has better actors and directors. If the movie pulls it through then the editing guy should get the maximum credit.
@LJ D’Arpa Dude, why did you put Slumdog Millionaire so up in the list? I don’t think the movie had any merit other than glamorization of poverty. The performances were good but not compelling and it was just one “feel-good” movie at the end that viewers vouched for in these grim and desperate times.
I think everyone here is living with this weird and false classification of Indian Cinema being Bollywood Cinema. Let me get this straight to those who are not acquainted to this first-hand. Bollywood is to India what Hollywood is to the US and world i.e. they produce mostly crap films packaged will for the average film goers. Needless to say that the majority of people in the world are these average film goers who just want some entertainment away from the routine soaps and reality show crap on TV.
Indian Cinema on the other hand is hard to classify as it has continued to fall short of being labeled under any genre. Most good directors of Indian Cinema like Adoor, Shyam Benegal, Ghatak, Ray, Ghosh are artists not many know in India. They are more like names used with respect during film festivals. It’s the crap Bollywood musicals that take away all the media light.
One more thing, I guess there’s a reason why we are here at TheAuteurs and not on any other movie forum because we are not just general movie goers. We are serious cinephiles unlike those who worship Hollywood or Bollywood and give a dumb “who” on hearing the names like Wong Kar Wai, Kurosawa, Stone, Eisenstein etc.
P.S. I am new here. So just forget what I said just now.
@John Smith Wikipedia mentions it explicitly that The Burning of Red Lotus Temple is the longest mainstream film while Matrjoschka is the longest experimental film.
I think Lost Highway failed in the beginning and David Lynch then tried hard successfully to ride it through. The beginning of Lost Highway was barren and devoid of any cinematic performances worth of attention or merit. I see Lost Highway as the blueprint which David Lynch perfected with Mulholland Drive. The idea of various layers was although not new to Lynch but introducing the various layers of deception in making the viewer perceive in his own independent way was quite young in his mind.
Mulholland Drive also made mark because it had the homosexual tones which are somehow quite in vogue among the Academy Awards jury lately. There is no conflict among both the movies and I think both are pretty much in the same league but Mulholland Drive is just a better and more deep version of the same idea.
Yes those brothers made that movie by creating a mishmash of vastly different stories which they apparently read in newspapers or saw on TV. I think it was not right to say in the beginning of the movie that it was based on real events because it was completely different from any real events that happened.
@Josh Ryan Thanks man, I watched Once after reading your post on this thread and I completely loved it. I have always liked movies in which music plays the most important role and Once seemed like just the kind of movie I love.
@Sandwiches I also watched Before Sunrise and I am sure this is just the movie you should watch your better half. Should watch Before Sunset too now.
Nice article. It’s interesting to learn about the independent film makers and their struggles in any country. Somehow they never get the attention they deserve.
What kind of sick ass question is that? How on earth can you put a whole nation (third largest nation in the world by population) in one category and also tag them as imbeciles indirectly.
I do know some of the films which are there like Stalker, 2046, Amelie, In the mood for love etc. but can someone give me a complete list of all those movies. Will greatly appreciate it.
I am not sure what is the vision of the makers of theauteurs but I have received the notion that this site is for those who have higher taste in cinema. There are already many sites who are rather more keen on creating a database. I would like it to stick to quality works and Twilight certainly doesn’t deserve any place if we think about it this way.
Dude, you have committed a felony by mentioning a cheap actor on this very high grade site. Shahrukh Khan is not an actor. He is all gas. He doesn’t deserve to act in movies let alone win Filmfare awards. He is the worst actor the Indian Cinema has ever seen. Indian Cinema witnessed its worst period with respect to creativity and better performances during his era which sadly is yet to over. He is to Indian Cinema what Robert Mugabe is to Zimbabwe. Period.
