“Style is the answer to everything...Not many have style. Not many can keep style. I have seen dogs with more style than men - though not many dogs have style. Cats have it in abundance."
"Sometimes people who really love each other, well, they have the uncanny knack for making each other miserable..."
My least favorite Peter Jackson work so far... A totally disappointing film that can't decide whether it's a murder mystery, a family drama or a fantasy. ---SPOILER--- Here we have a 14 year old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered by a serial killer. At the end, even though everyone is aware of killer's crime including the girl's family, the case of murder is unsolved and the girl ends up in heaven with all of killer's other victims, while the killer dies falling down a cliff for no reason. So the message is obvious here: You can't escape from your destiny... It’s hard to believe this film is done by the director of films such as Heavenly Creatures or Braindead.
This is cinema of discomfort (as can be expected from Haneke). You better not expect a certain conclusion. It simply invites us to observe, imagine and make up our own minds.

I really don’t understand why this film is rated so highly by the critics and movie-goers. It just misses the whole point and the only reason I watched it a second time was to see if I might have been missed something. Obviously I didn’t! And it’s not visually stunning at all, not even close to the book.
