About Me

“[Cinema] is a way to make people sensitive through emotions: to make them feel [and] experience empathy. People are touched and act ethically when they are emotionally touched.”

Bruno Dumont, 2011.

Sleeping Beauty

I really enjoyed this debut, and I am really enthusiastic about seeing whatever Leigh films next. However, in the back of my mind, there is the fear that I may have simply been dazzled by the film's amazing visuals. Indeed, I have a niggling feeling that this film may be a slight case of "style over substance."

Read about the new Dumont? Pretty exciting, wondering how he's going to handle a star

It is really interesting news! I really hope this results in more exposure for Dumont for a couple of reasons. For one, his films would gain quicker and wider releases (Hadewijch will finally be released in the theatres here in the UK in February). Also, more exposure may mean Dumont finally gets to make that american/Hollywood type apocalypse film -- The End -- which he was originally hoping to make after L'humanite. I remember seeing an interview with his producer in which he stated that in order to work with the desired big name American stars on that film, Dumont would first need to raise his profile. Maybe working with Binoche will do just that and finally give him the access to Tom Cruise which he has been craving all these years (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2007/jun/29/1). I have some excerpts of the script for The End. I will try and get them scanned, and maybe they could be added to the Fallen Angels and Flawed Saviours list?

That would be wonderful! (Scanned excerpts of The End). Yeah it's strange about Dumont's lack of exposure everywhere. Hadewijch still isn't being distributed by anyone in the US and I'm sure I'll have to find Hors Satan somewhere on the net (something I'm not a fan of) if I want to see it at all as well. This apocalypse film has really intrigued me and who better to do an apocalypse film than a philosopher? Thanks for that wonderful link. I laughed out loud at a few parts for sure and it was nice to see him acknowledge cinema, and that he is a fan of Rivette and von Trier! I'm planning to do a huge update on all my lists, the Dumont included, so I'll let you know when that happens. See ya around, Manny.

Thanks for the link, I'll try to see if there is a way to upload some pictures to the list. I'm guessing you know the title of "L'Empire" has been changed to "Hors Satan". I definitely can't wait to see it, although it will probably be a long time before it reaches the US.

I'm glad you liked the Dumont list. I'll have more captures up this week (for Twentynine Palms), and thanks for the link!
