there are two things that spielberg does that i really hate, i.e. bad characters and sentimentality. there are definitely spielberg movies that i dislike even less than 'jaws' because of those things, like 'jurassic park' or 'e.t.', probably because i didn't grow up with them, but even the more "serious" movies from him, like 'schindler's list', are not that different from his other movies because of the characters and the cheap violin sentimentality. if you notice the people on his movies, they are generally the same, star-wars-like characters, quite irritating and acting irritatingly and saying a lot of equally irritating dialogue, and that, along with star wars (which are not movies very different from the spielberg ones), for me, they were the beginning of the hollywood we have now (emir kusturica's quote on this website describes my feelings perfectly). but then again, that's probably just me because i didn't grow up with spielberg-lucas films. if i had, i'd probably feel differently. http://mubi.com/cast_members/4313

Its think its much better. Now I'm talking about the 3 hour cut. It is just unbelievable cinema. I mean I love all of Malick's work, but for me, everything I love about Malick is intensified by at least 10 times in The New World. Its his masterpiece.
