Inglourious Basterds

Tarantino used Pitt in this film to put forth an example of his own cultural defiance. He said go ahead and be the biggest buffoon you can imagine in your little squirrelly brain and I'll still make some sort of masterpiece despite your ridiculousness.

Keeping to myself for the most part; at least as much as all my familial obligations will allow. I've missed you and others as well, but I've been suffering through a phase of on-line psychological disconnect.

Totally understand. I think because it was Darren Aronofsky I was expecting something a bit less "Hollywood". But yes, I also see plenty of films where I put down my critical guard and just go with the flow. Nothing wrong with an "entertainment" now and then as Graham Greene would call it. And damn that Marisa Tomei. I think she's the same age as me and I do NOT look like that. Maybe I need to start doing strip aerobics... I know a few men who I suspect love that film just for her. Can't say that I blame them.

You liked The Wrestler? I just watched it on cable the other night and was disappointed. Just felt formulaic and cliched to me. I knew exactly who this guy was and what was going to happen before I even started watching. Sure, there was a true-to-life empathy there but I just never felt hooked enough to really care beyond the obvious sadness.

I generally like Bale as well although he does a lot of crap... But he's definitely an interesting actor. I love "Velvet Goldmine". I haven't seen "The Machinist" but I've seen clips and he really lost a lot of weight for that - makes him look downright fat in "Rescue Dawn". Good Baltimore/Waters story. And FYI, I secretly had Johnny Depp's love child... (I actually didn't really know anything about Johnny Depp until I saw him in Cry Baby.) They hardly have any John Waters films on this site. This site sucks!

Captures all the street-level depressive alcoholic haze that hovers like an invisible atmosphere behind Bukowski’s outrageous drunken exploits. Not as in-your-face as Barfly (as I remember it), and…  read review
