Oh, awesome, thanks for your detailed thoughts!
Proof that it's good to recycle (old footage).
I still can't quite believe that was Albert Finney playing Poirot. And how strange actually seeing all these acting giants in the shot...
This movie takes me back to before I was born, and leaves me there
"Metropolis" meets "Robin Hood"
No Williams were Hurt in the making of this film...
I have that song "Rejoice in the Sun" stuck in my head...
I clicked at first 5 stars, 5 minutes later it went to 4. Now it's at 3 and I am thinking about 2... The more I think about this film, the more I dislike it...
Rich study of stupid people
No matter how enjoyable this film is - and it is - I can't help but pinch myself when I think this film won Best Picture over Network, All The Presidents Men and Taxi Driver.
I used to think that too until I watched "Rocky" as an adult. I always thought it was just a feel-good movie, and then I was watching that scene the night before the fight where Rocky tells Adrian that he's not going to win. And it's not like a moment in other movies where the protagonist has doubts he later overcomes – Rocky KNOWS he's not going to win, and in that moment, as he says, the goal becomes survival. And because of that, I think the movie takes its place next to "Network" and "Taxi Driver" and all of that. "Rocky," the movie, sees all the problems those other movies point out about America in the '70s, and the movie is just one guy going, "If I can just stick this out, it's worth something." It's a really remarkable movie, I think.
I think people generally have the same opinion; interesting and exciting concept/idea, but poor execution. Also - and this might just be me - but the film has a strange one dimensional side, the feeling you get when a film doesn't really get off the ground. I think that might have a lot to do with the films musical score, which usually is a stand-out feature in any Carpenter film. Here however, it only makes it drag
When it's cold outside, stick the fire on and get yourself a warm glass of Whiskey Galore!
I have a soft spot for this video. My favourite part is when he goes to see his mum
Painful
A rare film, a great comedy. Fantastic, honest characters and the same goes for the direction. A film I could watch over and over.
If there is one film I could steal directing credit for, it is this one. I love everything about this (except for Nicole's performance - which at times is too forced). Perfect match of cinematography, music, light and time.
This is living with me for a while. Fantastic work
It's a gas, gas, gas!
This makes me want to live in Maine (minus the killings though)
I was impressed with this film. Reminded me of the horror in The Exorcist, very simple and understated (the woman on the subway train for example). I also liked Danny Aiello, giving a great performance as a miracle worker...
You can't get better than this for a perfect love story
Where can I watch this? I remember Kenneth Anger standing up at the end of "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" and telling us about this film...
Just me, or does it seem de Palma only works from heavy inspiration from other great films (Scarface, Blowup, Rear Window etc). I've always found his films to be quite boring (Black Dahlia sitting right at the top), while his overall contributions to cinema have been more like a fan - rather than true visionary
Just me, or is this film way over-rated? Why does de Palma make crap?
It has that 'made for TV' feel, which is okay to some degree, but not when you're making a film with Al Pacino... Who - by the way - needs to be given some good advice on taking up roles
I thought this was awful. Nolan always gets it wrong for me (with exception to The Dark Knight). ..Just a waste of talent, time and money.
Best theme tune ever?
I really want to see this! Just reading the synopsis is already amazing...
Battle of the Sexes? It's an old, dark comedy, but still, Sellers is great as always
I completely agree with Roscoe below me.
Great filmmaker. Keep showing us the truths about human nature. None of us are perfect
