Hey, if you have time check out the thread I started on the film. I'd be interested in hearing more of your thoughts on the film.
It's a good attempt at showing another side of life in the Hawaiian Islands. The sound track is awesome~if you love Hawaiian music as I do. You really must read the book to understand the history ... Kaui Hart Hemmings wrote the book and as always, I think script writers and authors are the unsung heroes.
I liked the soundtrack. I have to say there was nohea all over it...i just saw it. did not love it love it. The story seemed I dunno, not moving. Maybe the book is great, the film-making is a tad boring and liked sideways a lot better. Clooney is decent but I dunno. I could not relate to the story. If this is was more gritty, more indie. More over the land, more on Hawaii's history. It was one more coming of age stories, more one nom for Cloon, but I still have not seen a film that is not a postcard cliché. And now i get you. The sense of invasion. But the story was too scaterred, no? Too many plot points...too many things to relate...sure they all were relateable but I dunno. I was let down...I saw the trailer and I thought this would touch me more.
A harsh yet funny look at a unique form of communal life. First time actress Ronit Yudkevitch (as Miri) was excellent.

Don't be downcast, soon the night will come, When we can see the cool moon laughing in secret Over the faint countryside, And we rest, hand in hand. Don't be downcast, the time will soon come When we can have rest. Our small crosses will stand On the bright edge of the road together, And rain fall, and snow fall, And the winds come and go. ~ Hermann Hesse
