Best Musicians Turned "Actors" almost 4 years ago

Ones people left out thus far:

John Lennon is quite good in Richard Lester’s “How I Won the War”, portraying a shellshocked trooper.

David Byrne is quite charming in his own film “True Stories”

Tricky’s role in “The Fifth Element” was small, but really well done me thinks.

Reiteration:

David Bowie in “Labyrinth”, although his crotch was actually the lead.

Tom Waits in everything he is in, even in his cameos in garbage movies like “Domino”…he just steals the show!

Mick Jagger is great in a few movies, but his performance in “Freejack” is absurd. I wouldn’t blame it on him though…

I am sure I will think of more later and be bummed I couldn’t think of them all at once…

i think i am sort of feeling “triumph of the will” followed by “the specialist” would be a pretty intense and interesting experience.

Who do you read? almost 4 years ago

Recently…

Story of an Eye by Georges Bataille (ooo that rhymes)
Anti-Œdipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari
Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
Obedience to Authority by Stanley Milgram

On another note, I would really recommend Cinema 1: The Movement Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image by Deleuze. Good for philosophy heads and cinephiles, obviously!

Gay and Lesbian Cinema almost 4 years ago

Mike in Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Private Idaho” is a pretty interesting character.

There are a slew of characters worth mentioning in Greg Araki’s films….I would say his first feature “Totally Fucked Up (aka Totally F***ed Up)” is a good place to start. Others include “Nowhere” and “The Living End” (which is my personal favourite).

Also I think “Edward II” by Derek Jarman should most certainly be on there! The character of Edward II is incredible!

Talking about Sci-Fi … my friend told me there is a documentary called “Out of the Closet and Into the Universe: Queers and Star Trek”…sounds interesting but i have yet to track it down. I am a big sci-fi buff, but nothing is coming to mind right now. I will think hard about this.

And finally, not to be captain PC, but maybe this concept should be expanded from Lesbian/Gay film to Lesbian/Bisexual/Gay/Transgender film. I mean you have already mentioned “Bad Education”, which is certainly all of the above.

Most Memorable "Open" Endings in Cinema almost 4 years ago

haha Ilya, but if you remember, Masters of the Universe does have a pretty open ending because after the credits roll skeletor pops out of some water or something…whatever was at the bottom of where he fell. IT RULES…see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE70Kpax_RI

HE SAID ILL BE BACK. OH DAMN.

Who else dislikes Nicolas Cage? almost 4 years ago

I agree I thought he was good in Adaptation, and really funny in Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona.

However, I saw about 20 minutes of the Wicker Man remake, and I wanted to gouge my eyes out. Same goes for City of Angels, the remake of Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire”…quite a way to ruin a fantastic story.

What do you think about Park Chan-wook? almost 4 years ago

First I must ask Brunetti, why do you think so?

I love most of Park Chan-Wook’s movies, but I also have to disagree that he is not the best South Korean director ever. He certainly has gotten the most commercial exposure in the West beyond cinephile circles in recent years though. I won’t mimic was Halim has already said, because I agree with him about the films he mentioned and his opinions of them. I will add however that his short film Simpan is decent and worth hunting down. Its another wonderfully twisted story he wrote before the vengeance series. His new film “Thirst” sounds really interesting, but we’ll see! Its also worth noting that his film JSA is a piece of garbage. I sure could put that more eloquently, but i don’t even want to think about it. All in all, I think what is great about Park is that aside from some of the sappy/sentimental bullshit he has written (Boy Goes to Heaven for example), he is both a talented writer and a great director. I expect many more good things from him!

My vote would be for either Im Kwon-taek or Kim Ki-Duk.

Not to play semantic games either, but lets not forget there are two Koreas…and believe it or not they both have film industries. In fact, Kim Jung-Il is a self-proclaimed cinephile. He even wrote a book which is a collection of his cinema reviews (he writes a column for the main newspaper there and is sort of like the Roger Ebert of North Korea, while also being a feared and revered dictator!).
