7000 Cubans died fighting apartheid .. i discovered watching Oliver Stone`s Commandante, whilst the rest of the world, including the US and UK, supported the regime. Why then do politicans still back anti-cuban propaganda, we should be applauding this great act of selfless sacrifice by the Cuban soldiers, why did Castro know then that apartheid was a sick evilness that was worth dying for ..
The Truth and Reconciliation commission was brought to my attention by John Boormans In My Country, the power of compassion which the Africans showed towards their torturers was truly powerfull, the native custom of forgiveness, Ubuntu, was inspiring.
Maybe supported apartheid was a bit strong i agree, but we (UK) did invade the Falklands for less and the US has invaded many countries for much less. Agreed the levels of hypocisy bouncing about constantly in the corridors of power are breathtaking, thats why films can be a powerfull educational tool, giving voice to many varied topics.
I hope many more films relating to Africa see the light of day, any recommendations appreciated.

It would seem the majority belive African history has been overlooked, Dave summed up the racialism that still lives among us, as a human race all history is vital if we are to gain a greater understanding of the human condition.
Lets not forget the great libary at Alexandria (Egypt) was the first of it`s kind to collect books from beyond it`s borders, as early as the third century BC, a thirst for all knowledge that was tragically lost a few hundred years later with the onset of various religons taking the lead in guiding man. Why and when we started overlooking various sections of world history is around about this time in my opinion. Maybe we all should start investigating because surely the answers to the future lie in our past ..
George Bancroft ` waste the bulk of our time watching movies, which is the worst way to learn about the history of anything, sans beauty and popular culture`
Jason Trochesset Vicente, I believe that there is enough lies in western films about the west, that we don’t need any about Africa. If you like Stone’s film about the bearded one, just wait until Sean Penn make his doc. on Hugo Chavez. What confounds me are statements like ‘Castro knew then that apartheid was a sick evilness that was worth dying for.’ Worth who dying for? Certainly not his life, but a few thousand Cuban men? Sure why not. Be careful of idolizing such men as this.
I struggle to see why you are confounded by my statement about Castro`s belief in the evilness of apartheid and the conviction by him and his comrades to die in an armed struggle on African soil. Is it because you belived the Mcarthy policies of the time that communism was the great threat to the world, resulting in the Vietnam war, academics in America being persicuted for speaking out, people locked up without trial, witch hunts generally, Nixon coming to power `be carefull of idolizing such men` there`s a saying in Yorkshire `people in glass houses should`nt throw stones`.
Still commi bashing in the good old USA ey Jason ….. the Russians or Chinese never nuked no one though .. oh and Che fought in Africa against aparthied whilst US bombed and murdered innocent people living simple, dignified lifes in Vietnam .. you see thats the problem …. western history has portrayed the US as a nation fighting the good fight when all along the opposite is fact. Wake up Jason .. who`s the biggest arms dealers in the world .. not Africa anyway .. what do arms do ..KILL .. me thinks your the one who`s babbling ..
Anyway enjoyed the forum .. all the best to one n all who commented so far .. even you Jason x
My first thoughts upon hearing of arrest was that Roman should be allowed bail, then let the lawyers decide, but upon reading the accounts of what Roman admitted at the time of the rape, i belive he should be extradited without bail, as any time he does know could be knocked off his sentence when in US. There`s also the fact that there was another woman present at the time ?? also where was Jack Nickolson, not that i`m saying he was in anyway involved, but it was in his house, so maybe there`s a bigger story here ??
After watching Ken Loach`s Looking For Eric, a typical loach gem, i was impressed with Eric`s performance. In Elizabeth i thought he was pretty poor, but brave for attempting the role in a big budget movie none the less. All in all i wish him well in any future venture and who knows he may become a solid actor in years to come ..

I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.
