Gummo is perfect in a strange way… i love the absence of a normal linear story
anyway, i would love this movie just for the bacon taped to the wall during the bathtub scene
and mister lonely, well, i love the music and Herzog.
antichrist is a masterpiece, there’s no way no day off even compare
i’m a fan of von Trier and i must say that i’ve always hated movies which are made to look like documentaries
Éric Rohmer (Pauline at the Beach) 0 – Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light) 1
I love Rohmer’s work, but my vote goes to Reygadas.
Silent Light is a much better movie than Pauline at the Beach, it is unique and strange and can be sometimes funny while also touching. I love the characters who look like they’re confronted to deeper emotions than they can cope with.
Elia Kazan – Baby Doll 0 vs Andrzej Żuławski – L’important c’est d’aimer 1
L’important c’est d’aimer is my favorite discovery of the Cup (or at least of the first round).
I love Romy Schneider, Klaus Kinski, and well, pretty much everything about this movie.
John Cassavetes (Minnie & Moscowitz) 1 – Norman McLaren (Pas De Deux) 0
Not one of the most interesting McLaren movie in my opinion, it’s a beautiful movie, but it bores me… and I just love every Cassavetes movie I’ve seen. I couldn’t vote against him, everything he does is just pure genius.
As much as I love Guy Maddin and Brand Upon the Brain, I must say that I actually hesitated on this one. Ferrara almost had my vote. The Addiction really surprised me, I never thought I would like a Ferrara movie, but this one was good enough to make me change my mind about him.
Anyway, very interesting match and hardest decision of the cup for me.
Michelangelo Antonioni (La Notte) —1 vs Dariush Mehrjui (The Pear Tree) —0
I’m not a big Antonioni fan, but I liked the atmosphere and the black and white charm of La Notte. Beautiful work of art that proves Antonioni’s talent as a director.
As for the Pear Tree, well there was too much voice-over and the old men where driving me crazy with the pear tree. It’s not a bad movie, but it’s just not my type of film.
Derek Jarman (Blue) —1 vs Shinji Iwai (Love Letter) —0
A friend of mine has been trying to convince me that Blue shouldn’t be considered a movie since there is nothing visual about it except a blue screen, but I can’t agree. It’s hard to explain, but it just worked for me (and it would seem for a lot of people considering the votes so far).
Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) 1 – Šarūnas Bartas (Few Of Us) 0
Few of Us was good, but lacked a little something to make me change my mind about how great Terrence Malick is.
It looks like it’s gonna be an interesting match.
No hesitation for me, I found the Brakhage movie completely uninteresting. At least it wasn’t too long…
And I couldn’t vote against Jarmusch, Tom Waits is just perfect in Down by Law.
Stan Brakhage (The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes) 0 vs Jim Jarmusch (Down By Law) 1

Directors’ Cup Voting, Round 1, Match 13: Robert Bresson (Diary of a Country Priest) vs Alan Clarke (Elephant) almost 3 years ago
This is really a hard choice, but:
Diary of a Country Priest 0 – Elephant 1
I love Bresson and all his movies, but Diary of a Country Priest isn’t one of my personal favorite, and Elephant is just so powerful.
I don’t feel bad knowing that Bresson is gonna win anyway, and Elephant deserves more votes.

Brazil 1 – Kagero-za 0
Kagero-za is a good movie, but to me Brazil is perfect.
It’s one of those movies I can watch ten times is a row without getting tired of it.
It truly is Gilliam’s masterpiece.
