herbie, the use of torrenting is paramount to the discussion! molly is asking where to rent films, specifically “major” ones. she doesn’t need to, though, because they’re all available for free download, usually in a matter of minutes, via torrent
the best bus in vancouver is the #4. not only does the #4 go downtown from ubc without venturing through the moral void known as broadway, but it then traverses the relatively unfrequented mcgill from nanaimo to renfrew – an unmatched breadth of route! why? i have a theory. get off the #4 at any point on mcgill and head two blocks north to trinity next december and you will understand
why in god’s name would one want to see a third instalment? the end of BEFORE SUNSET is heaven. it’s not that a third film, in and of itself, wouldn’t be great – it probably would. but i feel that the story as a whole has no room for improvement
“But what I’m concerned about is the kind of fanboy-dom which puts brand loyalty and commodification above the films themselves.”
commodification? as in paying money for a dvd when you can just download the files?
you’ve irrationally demarcated the acts of acquiring MANY criterion dvds and acquiring ALL criterion dvds. if you pay money for a dvd that is downloadable in the same quality, then you’re not paying to collect the film; you’re paying to collect the packaging. what sort of appreciation for film is that?
i’m not harping on those who collect dvds. do whatever you want. but don’t pontificate when you’re in no just position to do so
popular: Liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people or by a particular person or group
culture: The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively

i’ve never had that problem, lena. out here in vancouver, the public library is an amazing resource; the dvds are all mint. i also find it perfect for browsing and discovering something random, which i guess is the one aspect of video stores that downloading just can’t quite replicate
@polaris “If the movie IS available and readily, there’s no good reason to download except you’re just privileging your selfish desire to see it over your responsibility to pay for it.”
what an absurd remark! what responsibility do i – or anyone – have to pay for a download? your assertions that downloading is “illegal” are irrelevant; i act (and hope others do, too) based on notions of morality, not legality. and the moral issue regarding downloading is not nearly as black and white as you seem to believe; it’s been a source of debate for hundreds of years (see: benjamin tucker, for the view opposite of yours delivered more concisely and logically than i could ever hope to write)
the simple fact is that downloading conflicts with your moral code and not mine or many others’. that’s fine; pay money to your heart’s content. but you’ve absolutely no right to call downloaders selfish any more than we have to call you fiscally incompetent
@kevon
i agree that watching movies on a small laptop screen is not ideal. thankfully, viewing downloaded media on one’s tv is both simple and cheap. check out http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Electronics+Promotions/Connect-Laptop-to-TV/pcmcat212600050003.c?id=pcmcat212600050003 for more info
@riva, riva, riva
quit taking things out of context, you irrational irene. i would never eat at a restaurant and leave without paying because once i have eaten the food no one else can eat it. i have taken it and thus i have a responsibility to compensate the previous owner. it’s a pretty basic exchange of money for property
do i REALLY need to spell it out for you why that doesn’t apply to intellectual property?
the whole “well no films would be made if everyone downloaded” argument is entirely irrelevant. it’s also incorrect and disregards the capacity of human innovation, especially economic innovation, but that’s not even the point because even if it were true it’s red herring nonsense because it doesn’t actually respond to my and others’ viewpoint: that property rights are only just if scarcity exists
—
with regards to your second post, i never said “downloading” has been debated for hundreds of years, but that “intellectual property” has been debated for hundreds of years. and it has. and the idea of copyrighting and the arguments for and against have not changed to any significant degree
apparently after filming IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT claudette colbert told a friend, “i’ve just finished filming the worst picture ever.” she later changed her mind…
in september 2010 vancouver had a tati retrospective. i was very fortunate to catch all his flicks other than parade. play time was simply brilliant. he made a wise decision putting it all on the line with that film. his vision of the world is immortalised
“Falconetti isn’t believable. That’s all. I know I’m watching a film, but I can’t help seeing effort. People don’t push out tears or emotion. They’re held back.”
you thought her emotions were pushed out? what… the… fuck…?
@mathew
am i to infer that you believe that someone who (in her belief) carried out god’s will, only to imprisoned, starved, abused and psychologically tortured by god’s representatives, might display less emotion? a bulging of the eyes is just TOO MUCH?
in your experience, how do people in those situations behave?
@riva “I agree with you that the arts market will have to evolve to meet the digital age, and it’s far from there yet.”
simply, it’s far from there only because it doesn’t need to be. as long as you and others continue to prop up an industry by buying products whose prices are discordant with their incremental value (you’re essentially paying $50 for a nice cover and the rush of consumerism coursing through your veins), the industry has no impetus to change
and when did i say that i know what measures those in the industry will take to adapt? ask them!
however, all of this is irrelevant to the point that i originally made and that i will underline this time so you don’t miss it again:
@movie janitor “Just downloading the files of Criterion DVDs—which are readily available for sale or rental—is called illegal.”
illegal? i feel pity for a being so subordinate that he bases his actions on what a government body tells him instead of his own assessments of what’s right and wrong. morality isn’t for everyone, i guess
— “You’re actually harping at me for paying a reasonable price for an art product rather than just taking it illegally? You’re a fucking moron.”
if you could read well, you’d have noticed that i explicitly stated that i was not harping on anyone for buying dvds. i was, however, harping on you for berating someone else’s purchasing habits. it’s astonishing that you were unable to gather this given that you quoted my effort to make it clear
“i’m not harping on those who collect dvds. do whatever you want. but don’t pontificate when you’re in no just position to do so”
(curtis francis)
— “Hey, fucking moron, It’s called paying a reasonable price to the company that took the time and the effort to remaster the film in good quality instead of just downloading it illegally as you suggest.”
personally, i have in no way asked anyone to take that time or effort, so i feel no duty to reimburse them
— “In turn, a judicious support of the remastering and sale of films of high quality supports more such efforts in the future. If EVERYONE downloaded the shit without paying a cent for it, then these films eventually won’t be available. Got that, you fucking moron?”
that’s irrelevant to the points i made
— “If people buy any crap that Criterion puts out though, it sends the wrong message, at least in terms of what happens with the choice of films available for viewing.”
it doesn’t send a wrong message; it sends a message with which you disagree. but the fellow in question wants to own all criterion dvds, and that’s his right, and it’s not up to him to convey messages with which you agree. that’s your job
@jirin “But, please don’t try to pose your sense of entitlement as a statement of rebellion against authority.”
i don’t have a sense of entitlement. i feel entitled to nothing. if films were not available for free download, i would complain to no one
i also never claimed to be rebelling against authority. but, now that you mention it, i suppose that violating one’s government’s idiotic copyright laws is a rebellious act, although obviously microscopic in nature and in effect relative to most else that’s happening in the world
