About Me

2011 To paraphrase Benjamin: “The image must communicate something (other than itself).”

2010 Not so much a profile than a viewing diary. Twenty-ten is year zero for a new found appreciation for cinema. It is in fact a hunger, a sudden voracious appetite for movies.

Differs slightly from youthful cinephilia since a pre-conceived notion of what cinema is and what is should be has been formed over the years. Not just from films, but books, television, visual spectacles (consider the eerie clarity of late December skies of Southern California), and life itself. A cinephile of little means, it is a cinema out of order. Some canonical films remain unseen, while others are simply imagined. (Borges, had he lived in our time, would have conceived of the Library of Babel as a film archive as well.)

A diary to discover new works and reassess old favorites. Reviews and lists reflect films viewed recently. (Mostly 2010, but a few 2009 stand outs.) Thus a desire for fresh eyes (do they still sparkle in the dark?), and tenderness as an aspirational virtue.

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.
