My Neighbour Totoro 0 – PRISONER 13 1
My least favorite of the Fernando de Fuentes’ revolution trilogy (El Compadre Mendoza is the one I prefer), but I’m not a fan of Japanese animation
The Life of Oharu – The Secret Formula
Never seen The Secret Formula
Tokyo Twilight – The Paper Man
What a pity! Never seen The Paper Man, although I love a couple of Ismael Rodríguez’s better known films
Distant Thunder (Satyajit Ray) v The Last Wave (Weir)
Unable to vote, I’ve seen Ray’s long time ago and not impressed by Weir’s
The Terrorist 0 – Black Robe 1
In Search of the Famine (Mrinal Sen) v Rabbit Proof Fence (Noyce)
I’m ashamed to say I have never seen a film by Mrinal Sen, on the contrary I have seen many films by Noyce and he has several among the worst of all time
The Sacrifice – The Wind will Carry Us
0-0 My least favorite of both filmmakers
The Dawns Here are Quiet 1 – The Apple 0
Certainly my type of film, only injured for a couple of annoying color flashbacks (too long and visually incongruent)
From my work with They Shoot Pictures I know 3 old surveys with slightly different results (they include Earth). Khutsiev’s number 8 is the biggest surprise here.
I’m glad to see Raizman’s Mashenka (Masha, number 10), a lovely little jewel with a fabulous lead actress. I liked it so much that I translated the English subtitles into Spanish (which is my language).
Earth and Man With a Movie Camera make the list in similar surveys about Soviet films. Iosseliani’s There Once Was a Singing Blackbird also would make the list in part 2.
I believe number 25 is Kozintsev’s Yunost Maksima, not Donskoy.
Perhaps someone may believe it is a mistake, however it is true. Russian critics always lists numbers 1,2,3 and 4 (in different orders) and Mikhalkov or Khutsiev’s movies next. Stalker, Come and See and many others Western favourites are less acclaimed…
