Sion Sono Discussion Forum about 2 years ago

I wanted to start a forum where fans of the Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono can discuss anything about his films or the man himself.

Also, any information on where to access his non-US released films would be fantastic.

I can’t agree more. Although I have problems with the film, I can’t think of another movie that felt as fresh as it does that I have seen in a long time. And on top of the problems there are so many things I love about it as well. Moments in the writing are beautiful and the acting from many of the performers is top notch. Plus it has a sensibility to it that really does give feelings of love, in more ways than one, throughout the movie.

Have you seen any other works by Sono?

POLARISDIB, I found you’re thoughts on Exte very insightful. Also if you want some links to where you can get Love Exposure and some other Sono films message me. That goes for all others on this board as well!

Who knows, I read in an interview from a year ago that they are, but to be honest I seriously doubt it. I’ve seen a few of his older films and they aren’t exactly profitable to any kind of large audience so it would have to be a very small, independent releaser. But hopefully they will still get released! Also if anyone on here has a membership at asiantorrents.com and would want to send me an invite that would be greatly appreciated, as a few of his older films are on there for download.

Oh I will.

And BERJUAN, if you enjoyed LE then you will definitely enjoy most of his other titles.

Cold Fish and Hazard would be really good ones to watch, and next to Love Exposure are the ones I recommend you to watch the most.

Suicide Club is probably the easiest to access, and a pretty good film. And it sets up a much better film with Norikos Diner Table.

Strange Circus is also a great watch, but the subject matter is kind of taboo so you might want to read up on it before you watch it.

Exte is great if your in the mood for some great campy stuff.

FRANK W, do you have any particular films you recommend? I’m always looking for good Japanese films and usually I just don’t find myself that engaged in them. I really like what I’ve seen from Toyoda, and I’ve checked out some Miike, but usually tend to dislike his works.

Also I’ve been watching Tsukamoto’s films, but aside from Tetsuo haven’t found the others to strike my interest too much.

I have yet to see Vital but I’ll check it out. The only two other films I’ve seen from him right now are A Snake Of June and Bullet Ballet. Which were both visually interesting, but felt really flat for the most part aside from the aesthetics. A Snake of June I felt started out really well, but I ended up not liking it as a whole.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

I think I’m gonna start my watching with Nobody Knows, I always like watching movies with children as the leads.
