“I’m quite surprised no one has mentioned Brian De Palma – a man who will throw (quite literally) anything and everything at a scene, regardless of whether or not it was needed”
I enjoyed kicking and screaming but I couldnt help but to not respect it for it’s originality because it was waaaay too much like a Whit Stillman film even down to the actors. Does anybody else see this?
i dont have a problem with modern silent film appreciation. It’s just that it’s all maddin does. He doenst stray from it. And the narratives on Brand upon the brain are ridiculous! It’s like beat poetry, or any other art for the sake of art that is pointless snobbery.
I don’t mind if anyone uses silent film techniques in modern times. But I think maddin relys on it just so people say, “oh wow this is different i guess i should like it more because of this.”
“Jasper, at least get your facts straight about Maddin’s filmography. He has made several sound films like TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL, CAREFUL, and others.”
and those films don’t rely on old film techniques?
Brandon, I never said that maddin was doing something wrong. I think his style is pretentious. Since when did calling someone pretentious become synonymous with wrong, or bad even? You can be a good filmmaker and still be pretentious as fuck.
And stop implying that i am only attacking him because he is different. Difference is the one thing I embrace and seek out in film. But when film goes way out in that left field of art for the sake of art (or different for the the sake of it), it becomes meaningless pretentious bullshit. And yeah, his films are boring.
Maddin’s dedication to replicating the style of silent and early sound films is anachronism, and, whether you yourself like it or not, anachronism is hardly a pointless, substanceless technique.
wow, now that’s pretentious. Let me guess, you’d probably die for cinema too.
I don’t seem to be getting my point across here. i never said maddin was pretentious soley on his old and silent film techniques. I have NO problem with people utilizing those methods. It’s only in cases (with maddin for example) where I feel that the use of silent and old film techniques is meaningless and distracting because I feel that it doesnt add anything to the overall value of the the film. It’s almost as if the effect is the focal point.
I guess all I have to say is that I feel that maddin is style over substance, and I’m sorry if i look for more substance and less flash. However, there are certain films where the style is the substance, being that it is the purpose that the director made the film for (ie Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage). But in cases like that the style is so unique that it is incredibly original. So forgive me if I feel that if the only style you have is one that was already done 80 years ago, so you will look original and unique to cinephiles, dosnt appeal to me.
Mabye if maddin spent more time on the core of the film rather than the aesthetic or appeal of the look, then I might not see that as pretentious.
i’m sorry roger i thought that i wasnt the first person here to dislike a filmmaker on the autuers. I guess next time you try to state your opinion on a filmmaker i’ll just butt in with a “who cares.”
Those are the most anoying topic posts ever. If you dont care about the thread, don’t post anything. It’s so easy to judge someone on a film board for ANYTHING they post. I could probably reply to every thread on the website with “who cares this discussion is a waste of time.” and it is, it’s all a big waste of time to sit on a forum and talk about movies. Almost as much of a waste of time as say…watching movies. I have wasted so much of my time watching movies, and so have many people on this site. But it was all time worth wasting. I enjoy wattching movies and i enjoy talking about movies and bashing movies, we all do.
So please, stop pretending that you are the voice reason. It’s a film discussion board, there’s going to be opinions, and you wont like some of them. But by making your post completly state the obvious (ie: “Theres a debatable amount of snobbishness in every film worth examining. That doesn’t mean the stuff isn’t interesting or good, its just esoteric. Rarely will a filmmaker who is known for experimenting enjoy universal acclaim.”) is so fucking arbitrary.
I think you might be forgetting Nate, that Godard was the leading force of the french new wave and like it or not, pretty much every film (art house or not) has borrowed from godards techniques. His influence on camerawork, locations, music, is seen almost everywhere, and that alone doesnt make him overrated. Try to imagine cinema before godard.
The French new wave is to film what the Beatles are to music. And if Godard is the most prominent member of the french new wave then he’s pretty much John Lennon. And John Lennon is not overrated
