I honestly don’t feel ashamed of it (although i don’t really know if i should), but in my case i’d have to say Blade Runner…….i don’t know why it keeps happening….. in every single chance i give it (more than two)….

DISAPPOINTED BY DISTRICT 9 over 2 years ago

It is really hard for me to respect and (less important) like a film with a “story” that it’s not more than just a reason to desplay CGI and special effects. And that is exactly what happened in this one….. i have to give it to them the idea is more than a little interesting, the whole thing about aliens in need are treated like second class citizens was a great opportunity to turn into a great script.

The result: a pretty bad script, probably thought to like hollywood and mainstream viewers, for a movie they wanted to direct to look like The Dark Knight with the type of action you see in Transformers. Bad actors, (except por the alien, he deserves an oscar), and poorly developed characters.

I started the movie anxiously waiting for it to kick in, but quit after over an hour of a pretty flat and predictable display of resources, and the had to top it with the scene of the guy with his new alien look crafting a flower made out of junk.

These bitter tasting experiences happen to all of us because we tend to keep some of our faith in the wrong people, who happen to be the ones making, once again, mainstream cinema.

And lastly, inspired by the last thread, i’m not watching it again either.

Tarkovsky: Symbolism of people's back over 2 years ago

I’ve been re-watching Tarkovsky’s films lately, and I could’nt help but notice how much he liked to take shots of the characters backs.
i have my own theories; one is that he was not that interested in the characters identity or personality but in the darker part of the psyche that moved the characters actions. He was taking shots of the character’s subconscious mind.
Being that Tarkovsky was so attracted in Philosophical and existential issues, he was not very interested in the character itself, but in the forces that moved the actions that would eventually affect and construct the story through space and time.
I don’t know if i’m a little bit off on this one, i’ts just an interpretation of one symbolic statement that, after watching 3 or 4 AT’s films, becomes a clear leit motif.
I’d love to read comments and opinions on the subject.

Thanks Apursansar, such techniques can also be found in films like WKW’s In the mood for love. Unfortunately, i haven’t seen any of Mizoguchi’s films, is there a particular one you could recommend?

exactly kenji…..and i know that details like this could mean absolutely nothing in tarkovsky’s films, that it is probably a way of breaking conventional form. Now, in tarr’s specific case, it could be more a consequence of his style (using as less editing as possible) than an intentional resource, although he claims that nothing in his films is there by chance. But still, when it comes to Tarkovsky, i’ve always felt that he uses “form”, to underline and accent meaning. And i keep feeling that the use of this kind of angles (rather excesive one could say) is meant to have a certain meaning. And we all have to agree that scenes like the one on the frame recently posted are included all over Tarkovsky’s work.

Tarkovsky: Symbolism of people's back over 2 years ago

well, of course it’s a technique of shooting because it’s used constantly, not even in one film but in a whole filming career (Tarkovsky’s case), and of course this might be a very subjective thing, although, it seems to me that a filmmaker that worried so much about the details in his art must’ve had a reason to do it. Or maybe not, but the fact is, this “technique of shooting” works for me in the sense that it helps to accentuate more what the other conventional techniques accomplish.

That is a really helpful contribution daniella….. it’s always nice to read opinions that show a little more than pure assumption, and actually are tools based on research for everybody to learn a little more…. or maybe i should just say…. what an excellent “contributing technique”?
THANKS A LOT!!

Can you name a film that should have worked but didn't? over 2 years ago

Dune. It didn’t work with David Lynch……
In the beginning, it was supposed to be directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who made the effort of recruiting an amazing group of artists to develop the project but the producers kicked him out.
I’m pretty sure his version would’ve been way better.

Surrealmoviez website down about 2 years ago

Its been a long while since i use the surrealmoviez website to get basically any film i can think of. I have to say it’s one of the best sites i’ve been using regularly. But it’s been over a week that i try to access it and it directs me to the google site. Does anybody know what happened to the site? Is it gone forever or is it something temporary?
