Fritz Lang’s “Dr. Mabuse der Spieler,” “Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse,” and “Die 1,000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse.” Along with “M” and some of his other earlier films like “Spies” and “Frau im Mond.” There is something about watching those particular films that sends chills down my spine they are so wonderful.
Any one of the three “Dr. Mabuse” movies that Fritz Lang made, especially the first two and of course “M.” For something more lighthearted you can’t go wrong, imo, with “The Thin Man” series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. The Charlie Chan movies with Warner Orland as Charlie Chan are great as well. (Sydney Toler just doesn’t do it for me.)
I have a foot in both the Basil Rathbone camp and the Jeremy Brett camp. I think the Basil Rathbone films have the hollywood charm (not to mention Basil’s good looks) about them but the ones made by Grenada Television starring Jeremy Brett are much more realistic and true to Conan Doyle’s work.

YOUR FAVORITE SILENT FILM, PLEASE. over 2 years ago
Anything by Fritz Lang, but particularly “Dr. Mabuse der Spieler.” It is a true masterpiece and a must see for any silent film fan.

“Birth of a Nation.” I respect DW Griffith in regard to his place in cinema history, but as for his films, they just aren’t my cup of tea.
