There’s a Lon Chaney film called “He Who Gets Slapped” (1924) that, between the clowns and the eerie circus music, makes for a pretty creepy silent film. Also if you look carefully you’ll see Bela Lugosi in an uncredited role as one of the assistant clowns.
“Aimee and Jaguar” is my favorite LGBT film of all time. I think everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, should see this film as it is a wonderful story about the power of love and overcoming odds in its name.
I was 4 yrs. old when my mom introduced me to old movies and we’d watch one every Saturday afternoon. I’m 22 now and we still watch one or two every Saturday afternoon.
I believe the camera should always be mounted whether it’s mounted on a tripod or some other device, unless the scene specifically calls for the hand held camera effect. Otherwise the constant shaking totally detracts from the images and story being presented and we miss out on details as well.
While Johnny Depp is a very talented within his own right, I would never compare him with Lon Chaney. Lon Chaney is his own entity, his own genius within that period of film history and his talents will never, imo, be seen again namely because that period of film history is never to be repeated again.
I’m personally a fan of the films by Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau. You also can’t go wrong with “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” or Pabst’s “Pandora’s Box.” And to the gentleman who listed “Der Blaue Engel” – that is neither a silent film nor a western.
I have come up agains this problem as well. However I find that Criterion usually has the best copies of films If they don’t have any of the films you’re looking for then record them off of TCM if possible. There are no commercial interuptions and they (TCM) are pretty good about showing the best copies available. Other than those two suggestions we’ll just have to wait until someone gets around to restoring Hitchcock’s early films. Hope this helped! =)
P.S. Sometime search YouTube and see if someone has posted the film you’re looking for. I know “The Lodger” is up and so is “Number Seventeen.”
Film is another art form that can sometimes be a means of entertainment but I think here in the United States the majority of the focus is on entertaining and making big $$$ which is quite sad because to me film is an extremely wonderful and exciting form of art (exciting because of its incredible versitility) that serves as an extension of the artist’s mind/imagination/etc and captures it all in a way that no other medium can (imo).
There are a handful but the first ones that come to my mind is “Chicago” and the new version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (it’s animation narrated by Boris Karloff or nothing with me).
Marlene Dietrich, Nazimova, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Tallulah Bankhead, Pola Negri, Bea Lilly, Hedy Lamarr, Ingird Bergman, Myrna Loy…..
As far as current actresses, Maria Schrader and Audrey Tautou are my favorites. I also thinking Angelica Houston is beautiful, maybe not the most, but she’s most definitly striking albeit that in a conventional way.
