Related films are A Clockwork Orange, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Fight Club, The Godfather, The Shining, Taxi Driver and Pulp Fiction. Really? Rather look like someone's favorite movie list. I haven't seen this one in ages, so won't rate it. But I remember Orion's belt as an uneven but slightly enjoyable norwegian action movie (the one and only).
Wow, this was a lot better than I expected! The American is stunningly shot (not a surprise coming from Anton Corbijn and his cinematographer Martin Ruhe from Control). It's slowly paced, but always involving. The women are beautiful, George Clooney is perfect, and every frame has something special to offer. At times, the movie even resembles Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece The Passenger. That's pretty great!
This is why I love cinema.
Although not a masterpiece, The Fighter is still a well-made, well-acted biopic.
German "science horror" that feels like a cross between Michael Crichton's delightful "Coma" and a hypothetical work from Paul Verhoeven's left hand. Unfortunately it lacks both in originality and overall directing skills, and becomes rather dull after about 30 minutes.
The King's Speech is undoubtedly a solid period drama. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush both deserve their praise, and Tom Hooper adds an elegant feel to the conventinal story, just as he did in the HBO-miniseries "John Adams" (the cinematograhpy is a pleasant surprise). That said, on a personal level, I felt slightly bored and never emotionally involved in neither characters nor story. It just felt somewhat empty.
Why do you bother, Dario Argento? An uninspired work by a former genre master and personal favorite. "Giallo" is sadly lacking in creativity and originality, which is a shame for a filmmaker who has his career built on creative camera work, original plot twists and memorable murder scenes. This one is nothing but a mess, starring Adrian Broody who seems like he is sleepwalking through the film. Terribly boring.
