Ok, admit you dozed off or slept while watching.... about 2 years ago

I bought L’avventura for $3.99 at the used video store I work at in the Criterion Section (which is known for being damn expensive) and was stoked, fell asleep halfway through at 4 in the afternoon. Finished it since, but I still feel bad about it…

Your Most Recent Criterion Purchase about 2 years ago

I bought The Times of Harvey Milk (one of my favorite films, flipped when I unpacked them at work when they were released), Amarcord, and The Fugitive Kind in one expensive purchase recently. I keep trying to snag My Own Private Idaho when they come in, but they go so quickly at my video store!

Current TV Shows Worth Watching almost 2 years ago

I still really like the United States of Tara, especially with the newest plot twist. Toni Collette is fantastic and it’s so fun to watch Brie Larson, Keir Gilchrist, and Patton Oswalt, and especially this season’s guest Eddie Izzard. I just hope it doesn’t become overrated (if it isn’t already with Diablo Cody) but I haven’t felt that way so far.
Otherwise it should be Game of Thrones, Justified, and Doctor Who.

greatest fantasy film almost 2 years ago

I’d second Wizard of Oz being the “greatest,” “cinematic history,” etc etc.

But personally, and don’t tell anyone, I would consider the first Narnia film on my list. It’s such an achieved modern epic, nearly two-and-a-half hours of gorgeous cinematography, fantastic visuals, and a story that’s simple enough for children but intriguing enough for adults. Tilda Swinton is gnarly with her dreadlocks and the child actors are more than decent. Not a dull moment, totally riveting to the illustrious ending.

But what do I know!

I’m sure a lot of people are going to go towards a Big Fish or LOTR direction.

Does the original Willy Wonka count as fantasy? Because that’s a fucking great film!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Sequels, How Do Long Running Series Rank almost 2 years ago

Chronicles of Narnia, perhaps?

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Prince Caspian

First one was actually amazing, other two equal a fart noise.

greatest fantasy film almost 2 years ago

I suppose I really enjoyed the first Narnia films (I originally posted about the new ones), but I think I’m a sucker for re-makes that are actually and genuinely fantastic. And the cred for the first one goes down so much in society and discussion because off the sucking of the second and third ones, but I was really blown away by the whole thing. And I love that a kids film had the balls to be upwards of three hours long. I realize it’s not the “greatest,” but for the shit that comes out nowadays, it is pretty damn great.

Rank Burton's Films almost 2 years ago

From what I have seen:

1. Ed Wood
2. Vincent
3. Edward Scissorhands
4. Big Fish
5. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
6. Beetlejuice
7.Corpse Bride
8. Mars Attacks!
9.Sleepy Hollow
10.Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

To be honest, the first three are the only ones I can really make a case for. The rest is just ranking films I don’t care about. Too bad Nightmare doesn’t work because I really needed a strong #11.

Holy eggs, have you seen this trailer? I don’t know how the film is since it has yet to be released in the US, but I consider this an impressive trailer. I’d love to see some discussion on it.

Perfect Movie Endings almost 2 years ago

A Single Man.

after an entire depressing life contemplating suicide
“A few times in my life, I’ve had moments of absolute clarity when for a few brief seconds, the silence drowns out the noise and I can feel rather than think. Things so sharp and the world seems so clear. It’s as though it had all just come into existence. I can never seem to make these moments last. I cling to them, but like everything, they fade. I’ve lived my life on these moments. They pull me back to the present. And I realize… everything is the way its meant to be. And just like that, it came.”
smile
sudden heart attack
death

Plus one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

Is it me or is SUBMARINE a brilliant and really unique british film almost 2 years ago

Richard Ayoade is an extremely funny actor and I was impressed by Submarine, but there was also the sentiment that it was trying a little too hard (not Garden State hard, but you understand). Though, I thought it was extremely honest, though I’m not necessarily surprised by a Brit being hard on himself (that seems to be a theme with the English). I suppose things about it could be considered brilliant, but overall I would consider it a relatively grand debut film.

Yeah, I’ll be living in Manhattan by the time it comes out so I’m sure I’ll be able to catch it. But that one person who commented said it was God awful. Who knows. I love Dom Cooper (because I’m an asshole) and Ludivine Sagnier was decent in Les chansons d’amour, and the story looks interesting as hell, so I’m gonna check it out. I haven’t heard anything about it, so I wonder if anyone is even excited for it?

Is Stan Brakhage (and "similar" experimental artists) filmmakers or artists? about 1 year ago

Or both!

My opinion here isn’t important, I am just curious if there is some kind of consensus that I am unaware of.

The definition of artists is extremely ambiguous. Because film is such a modern medium, not everyone considers it traditional art. But that is the argument, technically.

Brakhage, for example, with a work that consists only of him painting on celluloid (The Dante Quartet), do we call him an artist or a filmmaker? They are separate definitions and I don’t believe filmmaker is a subgenre of artists. It’s many arguments, come to think of it, but I just wanted to hear others’ opinions on the matter.

There isn’t anything to be confused about. I am simply wondering if you have a distinction between the two (which you apparently do not) and how artists like Stan Brakhage apply to your opinion.
