Thanks for the news, H. Criterion usually sends me Emails, but they seem to have missed this one. Maybe by March, I'll be able to afford it. And Senso? Well, the Naruse will aid my continuing examination of the silent era as well as my needed exploration of Asian films. I've been spending more time this week with my most recent indulgence, their excellent Sternberg set. This is part of a planned JVS retrospective, but I keep returning to The Docks of New York. It's really a Davis story with more truth than poetry, as my mother always said. The cast of Whales of August were watching while a close-up of Gish was being shot. Anderson exclaimed, "Cut. Print. That was perfect, Miss Gish." At which Davis is said to have remarked, "Of course it was perfect. The bitch invented close-ups." I have no evidence for this story, but there are times to Print the Legend!
