Getting high is not totally essential to my viewing experience, but I feel I enjoy film a lot more after smoking pot. If I am watching a movie with one other person, I remain lucid enough to carry on a casual conversation during the film while continuing to observe and take in the film as if I was not. Alone, I feel more attentive and drawn in by whatever film I am viewing. In a theater, it keeps me from trying to make comments quietly, but out loud to myself or the person/people I’m with. Watching a film with a group of friends high is best though. You’re free to just concentrate on the film, make observations out loud, or discuss it quietly.
2001 is amazing to watch alone to take in the audio as much as the visual. Surrealist/ Arthouse/ Avant-Garde films are much more accessible when stoned, just as Summer Action-Blockbusters are once again tolerable and may even be enjoyable or seem interesting for once. Any movie is a movie to watch stoned, although I might recommend Opiates for Salo and suggest not to take psychedelics or stimulants for it. Pot did get me through Warhol’s Sleep – still lame – and Empire – actually very enjoyable while high or tripping.
