Which film has changed your life forever? about 4 years ago

The Hours- I think I was surprised that people could feel how I feel.

Noi Albinoi- It restored a sense of chaotic balance to my psyche.

Marie Antoinette (only the portion of the movie set in Petit Trianon)- I finally had a picture for exactly what I want.

Vagabond- I don’t have a solid reason why, but it stunned me in a good way.

Teenage girls and violence about 4 years ago

What about something like Le Femme Nikita? I’m trying to think of something like Heavenly Creatures for you but I’m coming up blank. I almost said Secretary but that’s self harm and not what you’re looking for at all I don’t think. Angelina Jolie’s character in Girl Interrupted was kind of a violent sociopath? Kill Bill??? Although I think I’ve completely strayed from the whole “teenager” thing. Sorry. :(

VILLAINS. about 4 years ago

Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York!

Or….the White Witch in the Narnia movies. I loved those books as a kid and she’s delightfully evil.

Charlton Heston about 4 years ago

I definitely don’t agree with his politics and have seen Bowling for Columbine. However, I cannot argue Mr. Heston’s epic presence especially in Spartacus and Ben Hur. While those are not two of my all time favorite movies, seeing them as a child made me believe he had a nearly superhuman enigma and both those movies have a place in movie classics history.

What to look forward in 2008? about 4 years ago

The Dark Knight (getting really impatient now!)
The Lovely Bones (it will be interesting to see PJ’s take)
White Night Wedding (B. Kormakur)
The Good Heart (D. Kari)
London To Brighton (will be moving to Brighton in the new year!)
and if the Bell Jar ever comes out, I’ll probably go see that (but I shouldn’t hold my breath).

Pierluigi- you’re right there. I sometimes combine these movies in my head because when I saw them, I watched them back to back too many years ago. Thanks.

Salò over 3 years ago

The impression I have from some people is that it’s passe and perhaps even plebian to dislike this movie but I really did. =( I can definitely appreciate it as a modern Sade interpretation and everything that PPP was going for but I think I must be more faint of heart than I anticipated. I tried! The eyeball thing at the end really creeped me out.

Is Cinema dying? over 3 years ago

I agree that sometimes the fate of cinema looks grim (never in my life have I felt there was less to see in the theaters). I think collectively though, cinephiles (for lack of a better archetypal title) eager for growth in this field won’t let it die. I know I won’t. =)

Films that are better than the books that they are are based on over 3 years ago

I agree with “The Godfather.” I didn’t think it was Puzo’s best work but obviously a great film.

I thought “The Hours” was better than the Cunningham book.

“Gangs of New York” was way better than the Asbury book though if I remember correctly, they didn’t relate very much to each other.

Art—

Well, there are three Alice related movies in the making now. The American Mcgee-esque one (thank god Sarah Michelle Gellar dropped out), the Tim Burton one (Depp maybe to play Mad Hatter?) and “Phantasmagoria” (the Marilyn Manson one mainly about Lewis Carroll). I only have hope for the Burton version and even then, I’m skeptical. Though, to be fair, I’m also going to be difficult to please considering I was Alice for five total years of my childhood for Halloween.

I agree with you about the Disney version being the least disappointing. Sigh. Perhaps someone will get it right.

Sex in the movies: Disturbing? over 3 years ago

I thought the sex scene in Climates really disrupted the flow of the film, even though I understand why the act played an important part for the character’s development.

Is this thread a question of censorship or plot? I think I’m more disturbed by the inclusion of a pointless romantic involvement into a story than a sex scene.
