hi Mayye , thank you for th really helpful info about the jesuit center ……….. I have read about the jesuit before but never had a clear idea of there activities in film making.

nice effort , 1-ofcourse there appears to be a technical problem in the sound. 2-the directing and editing were really great and great use of music. 3-the cinematography was intermediate , nice angles , strong colours but there were no great innovation and no moving camera shots , also the direct front shots of the actors wasn’t good due to the weakness in acting. 4-finally , nice idea , intermediate script and weak acting. totally , the film was good or very good in the visual elements but was weak in the dramatic elements.
I posted it in your film page here in MUBI.
looking forward to see more short features from you soon.
well firstly , regarding the Oscars , for a film to be nominated for Oscar there are rules , for a long feature to be nominated in any Oscar category (except best foriegn film) it should have a commercial theatrical release in Los Angelos California and that is why many of the great films by non american film masters didn’t get nominated or won Oscars and that is why for example themovie “Battle Of Algiers” visited the oscars twice , one time as a best foriegn film nominee and after two as a nominee in several categories , best original script ….etc
however , many of these masters like Fellini , Kuraswa , Bergman have been noticed and have several wins and nominees in the best foriegn film category , but for the best foriegn category there are rules also , for a fiom to be nominated it should have a theatrical release in its country and there should be only one film to be nominated from each country and that is why we don’t Independent Iranian movies for example in the Oscars , movies made by Kiarostami or Panahi.
first of all we should know that there are rules for festivals also ,for all the category A festivals , it is not appreciated and highly not welcomed that a movie that was in the main competition in one festival to be in the main competition in the other festivals , so movies in the main competition of cannes normally(but not always) you won’t see it in the main competition in Berlin and that in Venice you won’t see it Cairo or London film festivals , However these films usually are screened in all the festivals but out of the official competition.
By the way there are 12 category “A” film festivals around the world.
for me personally when watching a film ,
1-if it is American then I will go for the oscars , golden globes and Bafta awards as a reference for the artistic quality of the movie.
2-if it is non American I go for the festivals like Canne , Berlin , Venice …..etc as a reference about the artistic quality of the movie.
well , I am not from Iran but I read about this issue too much ,
see , it is complicated , basically the Iranian government supports the cinema industry and this is for sure and very clear from the large n.o of Iranian movies and series produced each year and from the fact that the independent film makers are allowed to shoot there movies and create it , I mean if they hate Kiarostami , Panahi and Makhmalbaf they won’t allow them from the very beginning to shoot there films and to go to the festivals with it ……..however , it seems that the Iranian filmmakers knowledge , ideology , philosophy and understanding is far higher than that of the government and there success worldwide(especially in Europe) while at the same time maintaining the relegious measures and the standards put on them by the ministry of culture in Iran is something that the ministry can’t understand and can’t digest so they suspect that these movies may have hidden messages so they don’t allow theatrical release for most of these movies , however the people can easily watch it via other media means and the government knows that……….
so its like the Iranian Ministry of Culture(or whatever its name) is a kinda neutral against these movies , they don’t condemn it but in the same time they don’t openly support them and that is why in Oscar foriegn film nominations mostly we don’t see movies from Panahi or Kiarostami…etc..
and like what Takamine in Tôkyô no kôrasu said the governments normally don’t support those filmmakers who give it headache.
actually we can’t say “what is the best Decade?” because that is a pretty hard question that is very hard to answer it objectively and logically .
however , when talking about the American Cinema I believe that the 70’s was a revolutionary decade in the history of cinema , the 70’s cinema with its revolutionary standards started the kind of cinema that we know today , from the 20’s to the mid 50’s the american cinema had a certain style or look or shape , technics and system but from the 70’s till today the American Cinema have another look and style , technics and system overall…….while the period from the mid 50’s to the end of 60’s was a transition period.
and by the way most of the modern great filmmakers raised and shined in the end of the 60’s and the 70’s ………Fredrikin , Spielberg , Scorcese , Lucas , Milos Forman , Ridley Scott , Cimino , De Niro , Al Pacino , Dustin Huffman , Jack Nicholson ………..and many many else.
there are a lot of movies that are realistic and “feel like reality” and here are some examples:
The French Connection
A Man For All Seasons
The 400 Blows
Once Upon A Time In America
The Bicycle Thief
Battle Of Algiers
Das Boot
Deliverence
Crimson Gold
there are huge n.o of movies that are realistic either visually or dramatically its just what genere you would like.
I agree with you Nathan , united 93 was really realistic and objective and wasn’t one of those films that sells and trades with the emotions of the American’s like “flight 93” . I think Paul Greengross(the director) saw the historical responsibility of his film infront of the coming generations and that is why his direction of his film was that realistic and shocking.
I can understand how you think or feel , its a temporary confusion and its ofcourse not because the foriegn cinema is better than the American ………….. its clearly because you started discovering a new kind of cinema and ofcourse with it a new type of experience and thus your curiosity rises and your thirst increases to see and watch this new kind and type of cinema that you didn’t know anything about few years ago where as on contrast you are used to American cinema since long ago and you feel like that there is nothing new in it.
I think this is temporary ,once your experience in foriegn cinema increases and you understand , cover and “Grok” the styles and the “shape” of this foriegn cinema you will be able to compare more objective and the ideas will be clear infront of you.
I meant by this sentence in case of Rossi , I meant he is not objective enough yet to say that in his opinion he sees foriegn cinema better than American if he is to think so.
yeah I agree with you that its according to each individual’s point of view and that each one’s opinion would deffer from the other.
hey guys chill out , we shouldn’t loose respect to each other because we differ in opinion.
I think its all about the country and the regions you are living in ,
If you live in one part of the world you will find almost all the main movies for sale or rental with moderate logical prices.
whereas , in other parts of the world if you are not to go for downloading then better don’t try to watch movies in the very beginning because the movies are not available anywhere else and if available in a certain store and this is rare it will be for an extremely high price.
so its according to where you live and the situation in there.
however , I hope that one day movies will be available for everybody with moderate prices so that all the people will have equal chances in getting the movies with equivalent prices without downloading…..

well Rossi ,
I think this Majid Majidi movie is the only Iranian movie to ever make it to the final 5 nominees in Oscars ……..
however , I didn’t watch it but I have some friends who watched it and said that it is a really beautiful movie.
I have seen only 4 Iranian movies , 2 for Panahi and 2 for Kiarostami.

Digital Camcorder Recommendations? over 2 years ago
Tips to consider:
1-look for external Mic input.
2-look for optical zoom and don’t care about the so called Digital zoom.
3-decide what type of storage media will you need , internal hard disk , external memorycard , dv tapes ………etc
4-better get a camera with 3ccd or 3mos optical sensor , however its not that important for amateurs.
5-look for optical image stability.
6-best camcoder companies inorder(as far as my opinion) , 1)Canon , 2)Panasonic , 3)Sony
