someone mentioned Sukumar Ray – his works can indeed make for very interesting adaptations! Also, Savage Detectives – would be interesting to see the balance between docu and fiction.
Lots of people seem to be waiting for Murakami adaptations – I add myself to that queue… but cant see Wong Kar-Wai making one… Michel Gondry anyone? Especially for Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World!
Finally, Saramago – Meirelles attempted Blindness but couldn’t quite pull it off… any takers?

i think asian, african and south american cinema is very poorly represented on criterion… it seems asian seems to be equivalent to japanese cinema here… very little from south american apart from cuaron, cant think of a single title from africa! so lots of work to be done… iranian new wave, indian directors – most definitely ray and ghatak, tomas gutierrez alea, solanas, mambety, diop, ousmane sembene! its an endless list…
i think this is one of the most fascinating threads on this site… i agree with most of the comments – the third man is beyond doubt a superb example of existentialism in cinema… one could almost argue about the same being true for majority of film noir. I remember a quote from Camus’ A Happy Death: (to paraphrase) The fate of man lies not IN him but AROUND him. Could anything be truer to this than The Third Man?
also if you can get hold of a film called Bari Theke Paliye (Eng. trans. Runaway / The Vagrants) by Ritwik Ghatak. It’s probably the most beautiful and simple depiction of childhood… absolutely splendid! It’s very difficult to get hold of but a must-watch…
a fascinating list :)
i agree with several of the films mentioned above – the ones i’d rate highest are
400 blows
pather panchali
closely watched trains
sweetie
eraserhead
fists in the pocket
and some that haven’t been mentioned so far:
Knife in the Water (Polanski – if you’re looking at debut feature-length films; his shorts are inspiring as well – especially Fat and the Lean)
Memento (Nolan – unless you’re counting Following which clocks in at a little over an hour)
Delicatessen (!) – Jeunet and Caro
Strike (Eisenstein)
Clean, Shaven (Lodge Kerrigan)
Alice (Svankmajer – I also love his shorts but this is his first long work and I find it absolutely fascinating)
and finally, who can ignore Kusturica’s Do You Remember Dolly Bell?
OR Bruce Robinson’s Withnail and I?
