I was more thinking about Mekas than Brakhage !!!
like weerasethakul meets brakhage with a dash of 'la jetee' thrown in for good measure. amazing.
Beautiful, 'pure' filmic storytelling.
Stylistically amusing, superficially entertaining, but overall: "meh..." Could have benefited from characters that were not just caricatures, and a script that was not completely predictable.
Most action-packed film in recent history, if by action-packed you mean a million different things happening just under the surface. A moving picture indeed.
Probably one of the best screensavers in recent cinematic history.
What is it about the celebrations at the end of Fellini's movies that are so moving? Is it, partially—precisely—that they are so unwarranted? Only after everything is lost does Fellini think the party should start.
Knowing that we live in an age where almost everything is a copy of a copy of a copy, how do we want to live and engage in it? In a world where the real and the fake live side by side, impossible to tell apart, how are we supposed to respond? Is it still possible to be an authentic person in an age of mechanical/electronic reproduction?
Felt like a feel good feminist propaganda film full of oversimplifications, lazy PC-writing, and one dimensional characters.
saw this at HKIFF. have no idea what it means, but who cares? It was my favorite thing at the festival by far.
Finally! Thanks, Auteurs, for adding my favorite Hou film.
How the world began, a visual representation of a creative and destructive force. The sounds are equally mesmerizing.

devastating
best film of the decade?
This movie delights in objects and places, whole worlds of imagination spring up from them, real life falls to the wayside or gets owned by fancies, mysteries compound and at one point the main characters are almost watching the movie WITH us. But NOT in an overly-intellectual meta way. So crazy, and so great. This is almost like a kids adventure story or something. I really need to watch more Rivette.
Watch A MOMENT OF INNOCENCE instead if you're looking for a film about the making of the film that also has _heart_. Or 8 1/2. Or CLOSE-UP. All masterpieces. This one is NOT. It relies completely on the meta thing without penetrating any deeper than "isn't this cool, the circularity of it? really made you think, huh?"
What is this... war? What is this... life? C'mon, gimme a break. Can you be serious? The visuals are great but the over the top philosophy just ruins it.
Maya sliding down the rockface-- Maya going over the sand dunes-- The water reflecting off her rockface--
My favorite Maya Deren film. The beginning few minutes are the best ever, and with Maya doing this almost machine-like thing with her body, the motion almost becoming alien. The ony qualm I have is the party scene is a bit long, though I liked it... It's a step down from what preceeded it. It's a small complaint though. The ending image is great too.
Like the only other Ghobadi film I've seen (Half Moon) this one has a similar arc that is very unique to his style. It starts off w/ a kind of light tone, then halfway in, the moood turns in this almost supernatural creepy and sad way. I think I liked Half Moon more, although this one had less flaws. The only flaw is that the main character (Satellite) can't really act.
Stunning moody piece. This movie is creepy as hell, which is an accomplishment in mood considering that nothing truly heinous actually happens. Beautiful and mysterious and strange and sensual. Really loved it.
A very straight forward narrative with endearing and kinda hopeless characters... and oh yeah, it's a silent film that doesn't feel like silent film at all. The acting is so far ahead of its time, very naturalistic. Ozu really sees through to the truth, without judging it too harshly. This film is both hilarious and sad, but not in an too-weighty kind of way. I loved it.
