For French cinema, start with Jean Renoir films and build off that. Mostly easily, to the French New Wave: Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer, Rivette, Chabrol.

Almost no Garrel is available on DVD, but one of his very best, and his most recent, Regular Lovers, is out now by Zeitgeist Films. I highly recommend it!

I'm so glad you liked La Vent de la nuit! So many Garrel fans find it "minor" or whatever, but I find him most impressive in smaller, unexpected moments. It is a very moving, dark film, and I'm very happy to see it has a new fan!
